Complete translations are big

I've come across this review for automated translations coming into Horizon https://review.openstack.org/#/c/91523/ It concerns me that it has over a half million LOC in it, and many of these languages have near 0 translation. (I checked here: https://www.transifex.com/projects/p/horizon/) 0 translation languages have just as many lines as full translations; they are just shorter. I can't give you a specific well-defined issue about why this concerns me, but I'm worried about things like how big it might make our distributions, or adding time to how long it takes to clone a new Horizon instance, or use devstack. I've chatted a bit about this in #openstack-horizon. ajaeger has pointed out to me that this isn't the biggest patch we've had for translations. This one, for example, is 5 million lines: https://review.openstack.org/#/c/67521/ This doesn't entirely satisfy me because git clone https://review.openstack.org/openstack/openstack-manuals is taking several minutes for me this morning (full disclosure: I am having some network flakiness today). I'd hate for Horizon to take anywhere near that long to clone. Also in #openstack-horizon jpich has shared that we intend to prune some of these langauges out of Horizon as we approach the release. Maybe it would be best to begin that pruning now, to avoid late dev cycle churn? Does anyone else share my concern about the large size of these translations? Translation gate for doc jobs

Inspired by some discussions here at the summit, I'd like to setup some translation gate for jobs. Patch https://review.openstack.org/93526 (merged) sets up a test that can be invoked with "tox -e checklang" which builds all "supported" manuals. I propose the following: * Setup checking/gating jobs that runs this test and mark it as non-voting. * Create policy on how to handle failures. Proposed policy: * We only gate on manual/language combinations that are translated sufficiently. Right now that's for openstack-manuals Japanese with the Security Guide, HA Guide and Install Guides only. * If an import from transifex fails, creates a failure, we do not approve the import. * If any other patch fails, the failure might get ignored. * In any case of failure, let's send an email to the openstack-i18n mailing list asking them to investigate and fix. What do you think? Icehouse release note translation?

Hi, When Havana release, some language teams translated the release notes. Is there a language team who is translating Icehouse Release Notes [1]? Japanese team is now translating the release note [2] and it is almost completed. Once it is available, I would like to add a link to the translated page as we did for Havana. Including the final : with strings

There is a bug and associated code review open for Horizon regarding how to handle the trailing ":" on some messages: The Bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/horizon/+bug/1296075 The Code Review: https://review.openstack.org/#/c/84342/ The bug and existing code advocate removing the final ":" from strings that have it for consistency. While I understand the need for consistency, I just got a request from a French translator to do the opposite implementation. The translator for French shared with me that including the punctuation as part of the translatable material makes it much easier to create a correct translation. In French, a space is expected between the final word and the final punctuation, including a colon. When the translators are looking at "Image Details:", its much easier from them to recognize where the space should go so they can create "Détails de l'image :". Without the colon as part of the message its hard to know if they should add a trailing space or not. What's the feeling from the i18n community about how we should treat the final punctuation on our strings? Doug Fish

Hi, The latest update of Transifex broken the links to the language team pages showing all resources. eg https://www.transifex.com/projects/p/openstack/language/id used to show all of the things you could translate into Indonesian. These were really useful, since they provided a "home" for the particular language team. So far, I haven't been able to find an alternative to this, so we will need to send people to specific projects eg manuals or horizon. On the API side of things, we probably need to make the following change: - “outsource”: openstack, + “team”: 670, Regards, Tom

API-Quick Starts ready in French and Spanish

django_openstack_auth translation setup?

Hi translation team, I'm trying to fix some more translation jobs and run into a issue with the django_openstack_auth setup. django_openstack_auth setup looks broken, the job fails to run since it expects: django_openstack_auth/locale/django_openstack_auth.pot but the repository uses: openstack_auth/locale/openstack_auth.pot I can fix this but need a bit of guidance here. Where this should get added for translation - will this be a resource in the horizon project in transifex - as it was in havana? And is the name django.po for the LC_MESSAGES file really correct in the repo? Btw. Hello all, Today, we have talked with Yves-Gwenaël about this e-mail. He didn’t' received any answers and I think we need to discuss about it. I would like to know one thing, if we change a marker for a string are we going to lose the related current translation ? For example : currently I have somewhere month = gettext("May") So in transifex I have a string May I have translated in "Mai" (in French) If tomorrow you change into the code month = pgettext("month name", "May") Do we lost the translation already done in Transifex ? Or is it just going to add the context in the string already translated ? If we lost the translation already, for me adding the context into already translated string is a bad idea. We are going to lose too much work. And in this case the context markup has to be used only for new strings. I prefer to keep the legacy for old strings. Looking at the great work the Japanese team is doing, I wonder why the High Availability and Security Guides are not published on docs.openstack.org. Should I make the changes for these documents? Horizon translation status update

Hi all, Thanks for your efforts of Icehouse translations. I would like to share my plan for Horizon translations both for Havana and Icehouse and know your opinions. [Havana] After Iceehouse is release, the last update of Havana (2013.2.4) is planned [1]. As far as I checked Transifex translations, a couple of languages have updates since Havana 2013.2.2 (released Feb 13). IMO it is better to import translations for the last coming Havana update. Thought? [Icehouse] As we did for Havana stable updates, we have a plan to import translations for each stable Icehouse update. The first two stable updates are good chances to update our translations. [Juno] Juno translations of Horizon are now marked as "translation is not accepted" to avoid confusions. I will remove this restriction once Icehouse is released. As you may know, it does not fit for translations as many changes will happen in the next half year. INSTEAD I would suggest to report issues to Horizon if you feel difficulties during translating for Icehouse or have improvement requests. (Of course this list can be used to discuss these topics too.) The exact dates both for Havana and Icehouse will be determined after the next OpenStack Summit is over. Important notice about Horizon translation

Hello all Now Horizon RC1 is shipped. The source codes of Horizon in git repository will be switched from master branch to icehouse branch. Our translation resources will switch as the same time. If you look at the resources of Horizon, you will notice there are 3 resources with a prefix of "Icehouse", and 3 resources with a prefix of "Juno". Now we are working on the translations for Icehouse release. [Ironic] [i18n] Testing translations

For those interested in translations, I'd like to jot down a few notes from the last few days' work to get i18n'd strings into Ironic before our RC. Hopefully some of this will be helpful to someone out there -- it's been a learning experience for me :) Quick background: - the project was set up with transifex a while back - folks have been translating our strings on transifex - jenkins has been regularly proposing updates to ironic, which we've accepted However, late last week I noticed that none of the ironic/locale/*/LC_MESSAGES/ironic.po files had any actual translated strings in them. Some digging revealed that there were two problems: * most of the .po files had somehow gotten malformatted (duplicate blank messages). We now have a tox check to prevent this. * the file timestamps were newer than the translations on transifex. Easy work around is "pull --force". Manual fixes for both of these have landed in Ironic, and longer-term fixes have gone up for infra and some other projects. To determine whether or not this was successful in enabling translated strings in Ironic, I had to learn a few things about babel and gettextutils, but there's still a lot more catching up on the whole i18n discussion that I need to do. This morning, I confirmed, in fact, our LOG messages are getting translated based on the system language, if the correct locale's .mo file is found in the appropriate system path, or that path is overridden with the IRONIC_LOCALEDIR env var. At the moment, Ironic's API strings will also be translated based on the system language, not on the Accept-Language header. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ironic/+bug/1300939 I've jotted down some notes on how to recreate an environment which reproduces this without needing to package and install ironic. https://etherpad.openstack.org/p/TestingTranslations It also seems that we're not programatically testing whether translation works or not. Maybe there's a good reason this hasn't been done yet... but after spending a couple days getting it to work in Ironic, I would like to add a test to our gate so that I know it stays working. I'm not sure the best way to go about that, but I hope someone who knows more about tx/msgfmt/babel/etc can look at my notes above and suggest or get something going from that. Cheers, Devananda
