Switch to itstool for docs translation?

Hi all, I've been working on switching the docs translation infrastructure over to itstool. This affects openstack-manuals, operations-guide, and api-site. The current tools are based on xml2po, but they don't call xml2po directly. Instead, they import xml2po and mess around with its internals to get some custom behavior. itstool is designed to handle custom behavior with rules from the W3C Internationalization Tag Set (ITS). You can see the ITS I put together so far here: https://review.openstack.org/#/c/91869/3/os_doc_tools/resources/openstack.i… Using ITS also allows us to do local ITS attributes to override the behavior for specific elements. See a simple example here: https://review.openstack.org/#/c/91872/1/api-quick-start/src/docbkx/api-qui… Most messages in the PO files will be the same. The one big difference will be in how placeholders are done when there's a block-level element inside a block-level element (a practice I discourage anyway). Scheduling a Pootle demonstration

Hi everyone, I work on the OpenStack infrastructure team and we're planning on supporting your team with whichever choice for translations tool you decide upon. There was just a Zanata demo this week, and I've reached out to the Pootle project at Daisy's request to organize a similar demo some time next week. The individual from Pootle who has volunteered to give the demo is in the UTC+1 time zone and has asked for some timing proposals from the team for when we can attend a demo so he can check his schedule and we can settle on a time. Suggestions? Translation of log messages

Hi translators, Clark and Doug, to translate log messages, Doug has been working on having these in separate domains. That way translators can decide what to translate: User visible strings, info log messages, warning log messages, error log messages, or critical log messages. The base work is done in oslo and now we need to setup the tools to extra these for separate domains. Based on input from Doug and Clark and the existing blueprint https://blueprints.launchpad.net/oslo/+spec/log-messages-translation-domain… I created a first patch for our jobs that upload to and import from transifex. I would like review comments on it: https://review.openstack.org/95377/ Before this goes in, we need to add the new domains to transifex, I plan to setup everything for this properly - so this is also a heads-up for coming changes. Translators, once this is in, you will see additional domains - I suggest to ignore those for now and concentrate on the normal ones. As an example, for nova, you will see besides the current nova-translations resource additionally: nova-log-error-translations, nova-log-warning-translations, nova-log-critical-translations, nova-log-info-translations. New localized doc web pages

The API Quick Start has been translated to French, German, Japanese and Spanish! We now have German and French index pages: http://docs.openstack.org/de/ http://docs.openstack.org/fr/ (proposed - see https://review.openstack.org/96444) For all the guides that are not mentioned on a specific page, we now have a "secret" page which is not reachable from the main index pages: http://docs.openstack.org/draft-i18n-manuals.html It lists all the other guides that are currently built. That way translation teams can easily verify their manuals. If you like to move one of them to "official" pages, feel free to send a patch! Japanese End User Guide and Admin User Guide

Could somebody investigate this, please? Once it works again, tell me and I can enable testing and publishing in openstack-manuals. Complete translations are big

I've come across this review for automated translations coming into Horizon https://review.openstack.org/#/c/91523/ It concerns me that it has over a half million LOC in it, and many of these languages have near 0 translation. (I checked here: https://www.transifex.com/projects/p/horizon/). 0 translation languages have just as many lines as full translations; they are just shorter. I can't give you a specific well-defined issue about why this concerns me, but I'm worried about things like how big it might make our distributions, or adding time to how long it takes to clone a new Horizon instance, or use devstack. I've chatted a bit about this in #openstack-horizon. ajaeger has pointed out to me that this isn't the biggest patch we've had for translations. This one, for example, is 5 million lines: https://review.openstack.org/#/c/67521/ This doesn't entirely satisfy me because git clone https://review.openstack.org/openstack/openstack-manuals is taking several minutes for me this morning (full disclosure: I am having some network flakiness today). I'd hate for Horizon to take anywhere near that long to clone. Also in #openstack-horizon jpich has shared that we intend to prune some of these langauges out of Horizon as we approach the release. Maybe it would be best to begin that pruning now, to avoid late dev cycle churn? Does anyone else share my concern about the large size of these translations? Particularly the translations that have near 0 translated strings. Doug Fish
