[Openstack-docs] Openstack Networking (Neutron) documentation improvement request

Hi all,

I'm an Openstack "newbbie" and this is my first post to this mail list, so please be patient :)

I'm actually carefully studying Neutron doc, especially installation procedures, In my opinion the NEUTRON documentation could and SHOULD be improved, in the following my main concern:

In the "Openstack Networking administration guide" (http://docs.openstack.org/trunk/openstack-network/admin/content/index.html) We can notice:

1) there is no trace on a comprehensive guide that lead you step by step to a whole openstack with advanced network features installation: the guide just focus on Quantum/neutron server and related components and plugins installations, without describing how to install the whole stuff (all the other openstack modules)

2) The suggested mapping between services (software modules) and physical servers is only represented in this map: http://docs.openstack.org/trunk/openstack-network/admin/content/connectivity.html, but is not explicitly listed and explained in the guide, moreover this mapping sounds to me quite weird: we can notice all the services overloading the cloud controller while the network controller has almost only the network plugin installed!

3) look at warning and note written in http://docs.openstack.org/trunk/openstack-network/admin/content/nova_with_neutron.html: basically there is written that the service nova-network is not at all compatible with the quantum/neutron server, BUT in the official openstack installation guide (http://docs.openstack.org/grizzly/openstack-compute/install/apt/content/installing-the-cloud-controller.html) it is recomended to install nova-network service either in the controller or in the compute node(s)!

...so this means that, if I follow the official guides I have first to get an openstack instance up and working, then I have to uninstall one of its essential parts, that is obviously absolutely mandatory to make it works, then install the network modules!

Honestly: the first time I tried I had weird behaviors...:)..

Finally:

4) the L3 component is either essential for some plugins but uncompatible with some other ones (see http://docs.openstack.org/trunk/openstack-network/admin/content/install_neutron-l3.html)...IMHO this should be highlighted since the beginning and should lead to different suggested installation sequences and procedures!!!

BTW: Right now I asked for help in openstack " general " mail list, and I have been answered back with some interesting guide (thread "[Openstack] Neutron Installation: support request") and I first could notice that there is a completely different installation sequence: the Neutron/quantum server is installed BEFORE all the nova components!

Hope this post can be helpful, personally I would suggest to write a kind of "official" example to get a working instance of Openstack + Neutron + whished Plugin....and in not so much time I count to be able to actively propose something...please tell me if it can be of any interest

Best Regards

Marco Fornaro
