[tc][all][monasca ] Retiring the Monasca project
Hello everyone, As you might know, the Monasca project is not active and was marked 'inactive' since 2024.1 cycle[1]. In this cycle also, this project is leaderless[2] and no maintainer stepped up to maintain it. As discussed in the Leaderless project etherpad[2], the next step is to retire the project. I'm sending this email to propose the Monasca retirement and based on the response, I will proceed next. [1] https://governance.openstack.org/tc/reference/emerging-technology-and-inacti... Hi All, Ignore the retirement notification for Monasca which I sent by mistake. Monasca project is still in 'inactive'[1] state but we have PTL for this project on this cycle. I would like to call the project maintainer/PTL to check the project activities and criteria to move its status to 'Active'[2]. The deadline to make it active is milestone 2 of this cycle (Jul 01 - Jul 05: R-13) and after that TC will discuss about next step which can be retirement. Hi Ghanshyam, I would like to know how to make monasca active again? Where can I find the status or something to help me to prioritize what I need to do? Or can someone guide me? On Thu, Apr 25, 2024 at 3:55 AM Ghanshyam Mann <gmann@ghanshyammann.com> wrote:

Although the core monasca repos (monasca, monasca-common, monasca-agent) have passing CIs, I still see number of components monasca project have broken CI. python-monascaclient: https://review.opendev.org/q/branch:master+project:openstack/python-monascac... monasca-events-api: https://review.opendev.org/q/branch:master+project:openstack/monasca-events-... Also some of the monasca repos have been inactive and have no patches merged in recent 2-3 years eg. monasca-log-api, monasca-analytics, ... I believe the CI in python-monascaclient needs urgent fix if we keep the project. I'd also suggest reviewing the current repositories and find anything we can retire early but it's totally up to people who will maintain the project. Finally please be aware that we are making the big reap from SQLAlchemy 1.x to 2.x very soon, and I guess you need some effort to adopt to that. So having passing CI now does not mean very much and you have to mane sure that you continue paying effort to keep CI gree so that the project is kept maintained. You have to remove devstack-gate from required projects in all of your job definitions. The repository was retired recently and all jobs requiring the repo no longer run. examples: https://github.com/openstack/monasca-api/blob/master/.zuul.yaml#L8 https://github.com/openstack/monasca-api/blob/master/.zuul.yaml#L73 On 5/29/24 17:58, Sławek Kapłoński wrote: > Hi, > > Dnia środa, 29 maja 2024 10:00:16 CEST Hoai-Thu Vuong pisze: >> HI Takashi, Ghanshyam and Slawek >> >> I have some commits to fix monasca-api to work with SQLAlchmey 2.x. Hi Hoai, Thanks for fixing the gate and your effort to make this project Active. If all looks good and you would like to release the Monasca in this cycle then you need to propose it move to Active before m-2 (Jul 01 - Jul 05 R-13 Dalmatian-2 milestone) If it is still not ready to be Active by Dalmatian m-2 then either you need to discuss TC to approve more time. -gmann ---- On Wed, 29 May 2024 03:36:40 -0700 Hoai-Thu Vuong wrote --- > Well, It works. I just looked into this and TBH I don't know why those tempest jobs aren't triggered. They were run on PS7 and stopped on PS8. Maybe infra team will be able to help with that.

Thanks, Goutham for the response, I forgot to send it from my draft. One thing to note, if monasca release is not happening before m-2 and you need more time to make it Active, please discuss it with TC as m-2 is the deadline for discussing the next step for this project. There should not be any issue to give more time but it needs to be discussed in TC. -gmann

Hi Hoai,
Thanks for fixing the gate and your effort to make this project Active.
If all looks good and you would like to release the Monasca in this cycle then you need to propose it move to Active before m-2 (Jul 01 - Jul 05 R-13 Dalmatian-2 milestone)
If it is still not ready to be Active by Dalmatian m-2 then either you need to discuss TC to approve more time.

I just looked into this and TBH I don't know why those tempest jobs aren't triggered. They were run on PS7 and stopped on PS8. Maybe infra team will be able to help with that.

Hi thuvh, We saw your question on IRC, but due to TZ, you were not online, so thought of answering here. -> thuvh question on IRC: "hello, to deploy monasca, will I create a branch stable/2024.1" Creating the stable/2024.1 men's releasing the caracal which is past. I am not sure if you can create stable/2024.1 without caracal release, but you need to check with the release team on #openstack-release IRC channel, or they can help by replying here. Another question is related to the stable branches policy. If Monasca starts releasing from the 2024.2 cycle onwards and there is no stable/2024.1 branch, then is it fine from the backports from stable/2024.2 to stable/2023.2? IMO, it should be as there is no 2024.1 release for Monasca so backport fixes going directly from stable/2024.2 to stable/2023.2 make sense. But let's wait for stable branch core group advice on this. -gmann
Yes; The way you do this would be to:
1) add your project deliverables in the openstack/releases repository (they were removed previously with https://review.opendev.org/c/openstack/releases/+/905759) 2) remove the monasca project under the inactive projects list by publishing a change to the openstack/governance repository.
Please see https://review.opendev.org/c/openstack/governance/+/869665 if you'd like an example. There are a couple of openstack/release changes that this proposal depended on. You might be in a similar situation. If you'd like to have anything ship in milestone-2, please propose a release patch. If you'd like to delay shipping anything until future milestones of this ongoing release, there'll be no need for any openstack/release patches right now.

Hi, sorry for my late involvement in this thread. Both as release manager team core member and as stable maintainer I think stable/2024.1 should not be created, as we are already some months after the official 2024.1 Caracal release. But maybe it's just my opinion. Also, we are kind of late for 2024.2 release as well, as this week is the deadline for content freeze for 2024.2 Dalmatian. Again, maybe it's just me, but I'd rather add back the needed monasca deliverables as 'deliverables with independent release model' this time (if needed at all), and only add back to coordinated release of 2025.1 Epoxy.
