On the Live Migration support: only KVM is supported at the current time AFAIK. To do live migration with KVM, you'll need a shared drive (so that each compute host can access the image), which would be separate from the glance/swift setup (it needs to be NFS share or something like that).
On the KVM default: KVM is not the default but it is probably the easiest to get up and running. Most people seem to use Xen/XCP/XenSource or KVM (although OpenStack supports many more …)
