I'd imagine in this model the most likely implementation would be a 
roster where core team members sign up for a slot. But I also imagine it 
being left up to the project to decide the mechanics.

I think just let people sort it out amongst themselves. Nobody is going 
to get too exercised over a problem that will literally resolve _itself_ 
in 1-2 weeks.
