This is a subject I'm interested in and I'll follow up in a little bit
with some comments, but I wanted to clarify that there is also a VM state
called "soft delete" that is different than this.

The concepts between this database "soft delete" and the VM "soft
delete" are similar (in that mark an instance as deleted in software,
but don't remove data associated with them), but they different and
unrelated :)
