The same motivation that they had for publishing the spec in the first place: good compatibility across the various clients means that they are free to improve their server-side implementation within the bounds of the spec.  If they have clients in their ecosystem (whether they wrote them or not) that aren't conforming to the spec, then that harms their future freedom to innovate (in the same way as it's harming us now).
