hi,
you may have noticed that changes are in motion and an extra telemetry
tag being floated around. the following is your coles|cliff|spark notes
on what you need to know.
-- background --
three years ago, the ceilometer project was created to tackle the
billing of cloud environments. over time, people realised 'data is data
is data' and anything can be derived from it and ceilometer's scope
creeped. unfortunately, the scope creep in the developer space could not
keep up with the scope creep in the user space and caused confusion. it
also made it difficult to pinpoint issues as the 'ceilometer' term now
covered so much space.
-- what happened --
in the past few cycles, the ceilometer project has been componentised
into smaller, discrete projects to tackle specific functionality within
the telemetry use case domain.
-- where we are now --
to avoid the overloaded term of ceilometer, the Telemetry project[1] was
created to encapsulate the collective of resulting projects contributing
to portions of this domain. to clarify the purpose of each individually
managed project, the following are projects under the Telemetry managed
domain:
- Aodh - an alarming service[2]
- Ceilometer - a data collection service[3]
- Gnocchi - a resource indexing and metric storage service[4]
-- what's with the name --
the generic name of Telemetry is not to assert authority over this
space, we are just a collective who have interest and contribute to
parts of this domain. each of the Aodh, Ceilometer, and Gnocchi teams
are interested and open in collaborating[5] and building up this domain.
-- what happens next --
for now, as the projects are closely collaborating, they will share
design and meeting space until they are deemed too large to share.
from a consumer pov, nothing should really change. the services are
already packaged and separated into Aodh, Ceilometer, Gnocchi and the
documentation already references Telemetry[6]
Going forward the teams will continue to improve each of the services[7]
and help others extend them[5].
as always, anyone is welcome to contribute or provide feedback on each
of the projects:
- irc: #openstack-telemetry on Freenode for questions
- ml: [telemetry] subject for general topics, [aodh], [ceilometer],
or [gnocchi] for project specific topics
if there are any questions, please let us know so we can make transition
go smoothly.
