It should be backenda single word. The red dash is markup that the hyphen
should be deleted. It might still appear in a hyphenated form in a couple of
headings in the table of contents (which will be generated from the body),
but I hope I corrected it throughout the body of the text.

Sorry, hit send too soon. I am seeing "back-end" as a markup by
double-clicking the red dash and seeing the whole word corrected to back-end
using Adobe Reader in multiple locations.
However, I see http://chimera.labs.oreilly.com/books/1230000000969/ch04.html
as backend so I'm sending this to our copy editor John Pierce. John, can you
comment?
