Hi JC,

I think that's a very interesting exercise, and actually is something
that we've gone through internally as well, though from a slightly
different perspective.  I would probably take your conclusion one step
further and say that we should not just think about DNAT as a special
form of LB, but as LB as a special for of a "services router" that
might actually provide a variety of network services (LB, FW, IDS/IPS,
WAN Opt, etc.).  These services routers could be one-armed or two arm,
and might be plugged into an external network, an internal network, or
both.  The initial L3 implementation in Folsom was intended as an
initial step in that direction, though only with a very simple
"gateway service" that provided only the basic SNAT/DNAT that
nova-network had.  I want to do as much as we can to make sure
load-balancing is not a "one-off", but rather just an initial example
of how we will integrate other network services.
