We got turned on to targetd by its author.  I CC'd him on this message.
 Hopefully he can comment further on the development status of targetd.

It's worth noting that we also did some looking at direct LIO support
using python-rtslib.  The major downside of that is that cinder-volume
would require root access.  LIO support via targetd makes the driver
work much more like other drivers managing remote storage resources.
