A good question, Tom. When I read the release notes, I just feel, many people may want to know what's new in Havana release. These people are not only operators, but also people who are interested in OpenStack. They may not work closely with the community. They just feel curious. "What's new in the new release?" A translated release notes can help them to understand. The presentation you give is good too, very highlighted. This kind of translation works are not mandatory. People who want to do, just do. I think what we (openstack community) should do is to provide a platform to translators to translate, and a website for them to publish. Just thinking widely, not serious. I think either is okay. The reason I use "ja" for Japanese is "ja" is more common than "ja_JP" in Japanese because Japanese is used in one country. I don't know the difference between pt_PT and pt_BR. If your translation covers pt translation, pt looks appropriate to me. Otherwise pt_BR sounds good. This is just my opinion. (Or I think you can use redirect in MediaWiki.) Thanks. Akihiro On Fri, Oct 18, 2013 at 8:22 PM, Gabriel Wainer <gabrielcw@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi Gabriel, Please don't create just pt page. I think some people use just pt for translations for pt_PT. But, it will be good if country code will be used. That way people can differentiate that pt_PT is specifically a "Portuguese Language translations for Portugal" and they are not for people using pt_BR. Regards, Parag. Hi, I just added the link to translated release notes on openstack wiki. Feel free to move it (or delete it if not suitable). https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/ReleaseNotes/Havana#Translated_Release_Notes It uses MediaWiki special pages to list subpages. Such directives may cause a problem when we import Wiki content to Transifex and generate translated pages on openstack wiki back. How is your translation going?
We Japanese team completed the translation of Havana release notes (with some reviews) and announced it on the japanese mailing lists and twitter Saturday night. It is really nice we have translated version of the release notes.
Note that I have not created a link in the official release note page to translated wiki pages.

Hi,
I just added the link to translated release notes on openstack wiki. Feel free to move it (or delete it if not suitable).
https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/ReleaseNotes/Havana#Translated_Release_Notes
It uses MediaWiki special pages to list subpages. Such directives may cause a problem when we import Wiki content to
and generate translated pages on openstack wiki back.
Thanks, Akihiro

Hi Daisy, Feel free to move it or add other links in appropriate places. Perhaps you would like to create links only for the completed languages. My intention to create the link at the bottom (which lists all subpages automatically) is different. Before I created the link, there is no way to reach translated release notes without searching or URL input. Hi Daisy and all, Japanese team use openstack.org wiki directly. I created ReleaseNotes/Havana/ja and at most five or six folks translated in parallel. MediaWiki supports per-section editing, so It is very easy several folks are working together on a same page. When we use MediaWiki, we can use preview too. It really helps us. Honestly I don't notice the release note is uploaded to Transifex.... I believe MediaWiki is much easier to translate such Wiki page. Once we finish the translation work, we can announce it immediately without any additional work. Translation memory doesn't work but I think it doesn't matter much. Hi Daisy, Gabriel and all, I prefer to editing MediaWiki directly too. I believe it is more human friendly interface. I would like to share small tips to track the changes in the English pages. I use the wiki history use to track the change in the original. ---- - Go to https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/ReleaseNotes/Havana - Click "Page" at left upper and select "History" - You can see the history. - Click a date of a page you use. - You see a snopshot page of each revision - Copy URL and paste it into your translation page. (e.g., https://wiki.openstack.org/w/index.php?title=ReleaseNotes/Havana&oldid=33339 )
From this page you can check the diff to the latest page or newer version.
I think this is the version we started to discuss the release note translation. https://wiki.openstack.org/w/index.php?title=ReleaseNotes/Havana&oldid=32971 There are a few updates in the original page. https://wiki.openstack.org/w/index.php?title=ReleaseNotes/Havana&diff=cur&oldid=32971 Thanks, Akihiro On Tue, Oct 22, 2013 at 9:58 AM, Gabriel Wainer <gabrielcw@gmail.com> wrote:

As long as it is easy to use and effective, any translation tool and way will do. I am not sure what is the best way to translate openstack wiki. I don't think I can contribute this area, but there are several important topics to be considered. The pages in OpenStack wiki can be categorized into two areas: - Official contents (top page, release notes and some useful information) - Development purpose to share ideas The first category is worth translated, but I don't see any value in the second area. IMO it is not a good idea to import all pages as a whole because translators cannot know which pages have priority and which pages do not. In addition, MediaWiki has many directives. When converting translated version of pages, such cases should be considered. Some directives depends the structures (the directive I used to list subpages is a good example) These directives has no meaning in sub pages and they should not exist in sub pages.
