Call for help! 'U' Release name Mandarin speakers
Hello folks, Now that we know when and where the 'U' summit will be[1] we can pick the name for the U release. I'm happy to act as coordinator but given the location I'd really like a native speaker (or 2) to help with assessing the names against the criteria, defining the geographic region and translating the civs POLL when we get there. Yours Tony. [1] https://www.openstack.org/summit/shanghai-2019

Alex Xu and I reached out via WeChat to the OpenStack community there! I’m hoping we can recruit someone :)

So: chatting with some folks from China and we’ve got the interesting problem that Pinyin does not have a U! http://xh.5156edu.com/pinyi.php I will leave it for some of the locals who mentioned that they can clarify more about that :)
Yours Tony.

I admit this doesn't surprise me.

Yup, if there isn't anything that naturally fits with the establish criteria we'd just have a number of items that are 'exceptional' and get TC endorsement for similar to https://review.openstack.org/#/c/611511/ Yours Tony.
Thanks, Mohanmmed. In Chinese Pinyin, there are not any words starting with i, u, or v. :-( Regarding U, the pronunciation is /u:/ in English, but it has to use together with w, like wu. There are several alternatives. 1. use some words having the pronunciation /u:/, like Wu Zhen[1], a very beautiful town close to Shanghai. 2. use some words starting with U, but not really Chinese, like Urumqi, Ulanhot, which are city names in China. Yes, we do not have word start with U but we have alot of cities or sites start with U in english, mostly in Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang and Xizang, I guess we can find something suitable. On Thu, Feb 14, 2019 at 11:21 AM Tony Breeds <tony@bakeyournoodle.com> wrote:

This now seems interesting. There is no Standard Chinese Pinyin starts with 'U'. So I have a suggestion, because we have 'Wu', 'Lu', 'Hu', 'Nu', 'Yu' and so on. How about we give the OpenStack version name with the letters order of rotation? For instance, we can use 'Uw', 'Uy' to represent the Standard Pinyin. Then we will have a lot of choices. Such as 'Uwzhen' for 乌镇,'Uyxi' for 玉溪, 'Uylin' for 玉林, 'Uhbei' for 湖北,yeah, yeah, we have a lot of choices. Those with keen memories might recall we had the exact same problem when needing to come up with a name for our "I" release corresponding to the Hong Kong summit, and eventually settled on a local street which had an English name (Ice House Street). We wanted a Chinese place name, but as noted there were none in Pinyin starting with an "I" vowel. -- Jeremy Stanley

Now that we are in the Train (that name just keeps on giving) there is more pressure to name 'U'... Do we have people from China interested in helping with that process ? I am a native mandarin speaker. I'm happy to work with Tony in this process. Eric Kao On 4/19/19, 2:25 AM, "Thierry Carrez" <thierry@openstack.org> wrote:

Great! Are you going to be in Denver? If so lets start the ball rolling while we're there
Yours Tony.
Great! I'll be there.
