[announce][debian][wallaby] general availability of OpenStack Wallaby in Debian

Hi! It's my pleasure to announce the general availability of OpenStack Wallaby in Debian. I've just finished uploading everything to Debian Experimental today (not in unstable, as Bullseye is frozen), and the Bullseye backports are available the usual way, for example using extrepo (which is in the official Debian backports): apt-get install extrepo extrepo enable openstack_wallaby apt-get update ... or directly setting-up the http://bullseye-wallaby.debian.net repository the usual way. Note that while Victoria is available on Buster and Bullseye (to ease the transition), Wallaby is only available on Bullseye, which is due to be released next month (if everything goes as planned, there's no official release date decided yet if I understand well). New in this release =================== Masakari is now packaged. Masakari-dashboard is still waiting on the FTP master NEW queue though. A quick update on openstack-cluster-installer ============================================= Wallaby can already be installed by OCI [1]. Note that OCI is now public-cloud ready, and can deploy specific nodes for the billing (with cloudkitty): - messaging (separate RabbitMQ cluster and Galera for Gnocchi) - billmon / billosd (separate Ceph cluster for Gnocchi) Our tests showed that this setup can scale to 10k+ VMs without any issue (the separate Galera + RabbitMQ bus really helps) reporting 400+ metrics per seconds. As always, OCI is smart enough so the additional nodes are all optional (and not needed for smaller scales), and the cluster reconfigures itself if you decide to add new node types in your deployment. Thanks to new features added to puppet-openstack [2], the number of uwsgi process adapts automatically to the number of cores available in controller nodes. Last, with OCI you may now enjoy a full BGP-to-the-host (over IPv6 un-numbered link local) networking setup. This also works with compute nodes, as long as you decide to not use the DVR mode (if you do with to use DVR, then you need L2 connectivity on the computes: that's a Neutron "feature", unfortunately), or if you decide to use Neutron BGP routed networking [3] (though this mode also still has some limitations at this time, such as no support for virtual router external gateways). In this setup, only the Network nodes need L2 connectivity to the outside world. This also scales very nicely to *a lot* of nodes... without any ARP spanning tree problems. We (at Infomaniak) now only use this deployment mode in production due to its scalability. Final words =========== Please report any issue you may find, on OCI or on the Debian packages. Hello Zorillas, Vida's been our bug czar since the Ussuri release and she's conceptualized and executed our successful bug triage strategy. She has also painstakingly organized several documentation and code bug squash events and kept the pulse on multi-release efforts. She's taught me a lot about project management and you can see tangible results here, I suppose :) Liron's fixed a lot of test code bugs and covered some old and important test gaps over the past few releases. He's driving standardization of the tempest plugin and bringing in best practices from tempest, refstack and elsewhere into our testing. It's always a pleasure to work with Liron since he's happy to provide and welcome feedback. More recently, Liron and Vida have enabled us to work with the InteropWG and define refstack guidelines. They've also gotten us closer to members from the QA community who they work with more closely downstream. In short, they bring in different perspectives while also espousing the team's core values. So I'd like to propose their addition to the manila-tempest-plugin-core team. Please give me your +/- 1s for this proposal. Thanks, Goutham

I've had a go at the agenda [1] trying to keep it to max 4 or 5 sessions per day with some breaks. Please review the slot assigned for your session at [1]. If that time is not ok then please let me know as soon as possible and indicate if you want it later or earlier or on any other day. If you've decided the session no longer makes sense then also please tell me and we can move things around accordingly to finish earlier. hi team, we have several projects created in openstack stein release. we have created all the projects with an additional property (like OU and location) and now we need to list the projects with their OU properties which was set in the projects. openstack project show : This command shows the property field with the value on it. openstack project list --long : this only shows ID, Name, description, long, Enabled. How can we list the projects along with their property field value which was set at the time of creation of the project. TIA

Retiring the Infra mqtt service running on firehose

Hello everyone, This is a short note to announce that we will be retiring the mqtt service that was running on our firehose.openstack.org server. The server itself will also be removed. This should happen in the next day or two. This service never saw production use. It was a great little experiment, and I think several of us learned a lot in the process. Unfortunately, the service needs more care than we can provide it (config management updates and upgrades primarily). Considering the maintenance needs and the lack of use(rs) our best option appears to be simply turning it off. As a note, it appears the service may have died at some point anyway and hasn't been functioning. The lack of complaints are another indications that we are fine to turn it off. If you need access to the data the firehose was providing, you should be able to procure it via other methods (like the Gerrit event stream). Clark

Openstack External Network connectivity assistance

All, I am working on getting a private Openstack cloud set up to support a project I am planning. I have the install complete and do not get any errors and I can connect to hosted VM’s but the VM’s cannot connect to the internet. I have checked OVS logs and it looks like packets are being dropped. I have 2 network nodes and 1 compute node. All are using centos 8. The nodes have 3 NIC’s; NIC 1 is for the internal network and has no connectivity outside of the Openstack cluster; NIC’s 2 & 3 have external & internet connectivity (behind another router/firewall). The br-int,br-ex,and br-tun exist on all nodes. Hi all, A few of us here at Verizon Media have been working to ensure all services can support authenticating with mTLS certificate and key. We've had success with this, and if you've reviewed patches related to this, thank you! There's still an outstanding patch for python-cinderclient that has not gotten attention. It has +1s from contributors across the community, but hasn't gotten any core review attention. It's a trivial change, adding support for mTLS certificate passing for server version requests. [qa][heat][stable] grenade jobs with tempest plugins on stable/train broken

Hello Everyone, I capped stable/stein to use the Tempest 26.0.0 which means grenade jobs that run the tests from tempest plugins started using the Tempest 26.0.0. But the constraints used in Tempest virtual env are mismatched between when Tempest virtual env was created and when tests are run from grenade or grenade plugins scripts. Due to these two different constraint used, tox recreate the tempest virtual env which remove all already installed tempest plugins and their deps and it fails to run the smoke tests. This constraints mismatch issue occurred in stable/train and I standardized these for devstack based jobs - https://review.opendev.org/q/topic:%2522standardize-tempest-tox-constraints… But this issue is occurring for grenade jobs that do not run the tests via run-tempest role (run-tempest role take care of constraints things). Rabi observed this in threat grenade jobs today. I have reported this as a bug in LP[1] and making it standardize from the master branch so that this kind of issue does not occur again when any stable branch starts using the non-master Tempest. Missing configuration option in Secure Live Migration guide leads to unencrypted traffic -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ### Summary ### The guide to enable secure live migration with QEMU-native tls on nova compute nodes missed an important config option. Without this option a hard-coded part in nova is triggerd which sets the default route to TCP instead of TLS. This leads to an unecrypted migration of the ram without throwing any kind of Error. ### Affected Services / Software ### Nova / Victoria, Ussuri, Train, Stein (might also be affected: Rocky, Queens, Pike, Ocata) ### Discussion ### In the OpenStack guide to setup secure live migration with QEMU-native tls there are a few configuration options given, which have to be applied to nova compute nodes. After following the instructions and setting up everything it seems to work as expected. But after checking that libvirt is able to use tls using tcpdump to listen on the port for tls while manually executing libvirt commands, the same check for live migration of an instance through openstack fails. Listening on the port for unencrypted tcp-traffic shows that OpenStack still uses the unencrypted TCP path instead of the TLS one for the migration. The reason for this is a patch from Ocata which adds the calculation of the live-migration-uri in code: https://review.opendev.org/c/openstack/nova/+/410817/ The config parameter ``live_migration_uri`` was deprecated in favor of ``live_migration_scheme`` and the default set to tcp. This leads to the problem that if none of these two config options are set, libvirt will always use the default tcp connection. To enable QEMU-native TLS to be used in nova one of them has to be set so that a TLS connection can be established. Currently the guide does not show that this is necessary and there was no other documentation indicating that these config options are important for the usage of QEMU-native TLS. As there is no documentation which recognizes this and it is hard to find this problem as the migration happens even without those config option set - not stating that it is still unencrypted, it might have been unrecognized in various deployments, which followed the guide. ### Recommended Actions ### For deployments using secure live migration with QEMU-native TLS: 1. Check the config of all nova compute nodes. The ``libvirt`` section needs to have either ``live_migration_uri`` (deprecated) or ``live_migration_scheme`` configured. 2. If neither of those config options are present, add ``live_migration_scheme = tls`` to enable the use of the tls connection. #### Patches #### The guide for secure live migration was updated to reflect the necessary configuration options and now has a note, which warns users that not setting all config options may lead into a seemingly working deployment, which still uses unencrypted traffic for the ram-migration. Hi, Im trying to get metrics from octavia’s load balancer, but can’t get any (gnocchi metric list | grep loadbalancer not returning anything). How should I configure ceilometer to get metrics from octavia? Ceilometer asks neutron for load balancer metrics, and neutron responses „resource cannot be found” (and that is obvious, because Neutron LBaaS service is deprecated). How to force neutron to get these resources from Octavia? I’ve tried to use [service_providers] service_provider = LOADBALANCERV2:Octavia:neutron_lbaas.drivers.octavia.driver.OctaviaDriver:default in neutron.conf, but it doesn’t work either… Best regards Adam

Hello operators, You may have heard about a potential data-loss bug [0] that was recently discovered. It has been fixed in the upcoming wallaby release and we are planning to backport to all stable branches and do new os-brick releases from the releasable stable branches. In the meantime, the bug occurs if the multipath configuration option on a compute is changed while volumes are attached to instances on that compute. The possible data loss may occur when the volumes are detached (migration, volume-detach, etc.). Thus, before the new os-brick releases are available, the issue can nonetheless be averted by not making such a configuration change under those circumstances. The new os-brick releases will be: - victoria: 4.0.3 - ussuri: 3.0.6 - train: 2.10.6 The stein, rocky, and queens branches are in Extended Maintenance mode and are no longer released from, but critical fixes are backported to them when possible, though it may take a while before these are merged. Hello there, Hope this email finds you well. We are currently using the openstacksdk for developing our product, and have a question about the openstacksdk compute service create_server() method. We are wondering if the "max_count" attribute is supported by the create_server() method? We tried to create multiple servers by setting the max_count value, but only one server has been created. While when we use the python-novaclient package, novaclient.servers.create() method has the attribute max_count which allows creating multiple servers at once if set the value. So we would like to know is there a similar attribute like "max_count" that could allow us to create multiple servers at once in openstacksdk? Thanks and have a great day! Catherine

Hi, I’m reaching out to draw your attention to the Edge Computing Group sessions on the PTG in less than two weeks. We are still formalizing our agenda, but we have storage identified as one of the topics that the working group would like to discuss. It would be great to have the session also as a continuation to earlier discussions that we had on previous PTGs with relevant OpenStack project contributors. We have a few cross-community sessions scheduled already, but we still have some flexibility in our agenda to schedule this topic so the most people who are interested in participating can join.
