Hello Laura,
I think it depends what you are interested in, but if you have not tried it yet, install devstack and play with different projects:http://docs.openstack.org/developer/devstack/
See which projects you like, and decide whether you want to work on coding OpenStack, or code apps that use OpenStack APIs, or both. If you are not interested in coding, there are a lot of other options as well.

Subject: [Women-of-openstack] New to OpenStack

Hi,
I'm wondering where to begin. I've been a programmer for 15 years and I stumbled upon this list.  I've been a Rackspace client for a year so naturally I started hearing more about the OpenStack project. Anyway, I became very interested and wanted to get involved but have no idea where to start digging. If anyone has any guidance I'd love to hear from you.
