Open Stack

IRC is probably the best choice for aligning with the Community. 

That said, I don't find it to be a very productive communication tool and think discussions take much longer.

I agree. IRC only for our regular meetings keeps everyone on a level playing field and does a good job of providing transparency to the conversation.
