I think the best practices are to use the operating system's cloud images (and not bake them yourself.) Ie: http://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/ http://www.cloudbase.it/ws2012r2/ https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Cloud_images etc Converting a running instance into an image for glance is a worst practice (though of course OpenStack allows worst practices).
