[Openstack] ESXi in production with Neutron

Hi Paul,

In my experience working with customers, people typically either dip their toe in to start by just running ESXi/vSphere with nova-network, or they have decided on NSX from the get-go and start with Neutron. If you're just looking for nova-network, VOVA makes it really easy to do a basic nova-network setup: https://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-24626

One word of caution is that I have seen several cases of people who deploy Neutron with the OVS plugin with ESX, thinking that the plugin is actually working when in fact all VMs are simply getting plugged into a single port group. If all you test is that VMs can ping each other, you think it is working. But if you actually test L2 isolation, security groups, etc. there is no isolation because the OVS plugin is not actually managing the vSwitch.

Moving forward, there is a group of Neutron developers working on creating a plugin that works with basic vSphere vswitch APIs that come with vCenter (i.e., vSS and vDS), that should provide a basic Neutron plugin to support initial testing.

| Hi Paul,

| We are using ESXi in production setup with Neutron networking. ESXi is
| compatible with OpenStack and specifically
| with neutron networking. You need to add some rules in ovs and for the same
| you can refer below link.

| | We currently run a production OpenStack cloud with KVM only using OvS+GRE
| | networking. We’re in the process of evaluating a number of commercial SDN
| | vendors but we’re being asked to support ESXi in the really near timeframe
| | before we’ve had sufficient time to complete an objective evaluation of all
| | the available vendors who would like to sell us an SDN solution.
|

| | If anyone is running an OpenStack cloud that includes ESXi hypervisors but
| | does not rely on a commercial SDN vendor to make it work I’d love to hear
| | about it. I’m not eager to bypass the vendor evaluation process and
| | randomly
| | pick a vendor without an objective and fair evaluation, but I’m finding it
| | hard to locate any documentation that indicates that ESXi is compatible
| | with
| | OpenStack (and specifically Neutron networking) unless you also select one
| | of the commercial SDN vendors to bridge the gaps.
|

| | If we could add ESXi nodes to our current OpenStack zones, even if there
| | were
| | some known functional shortcomings, it would give us some breathing room on
| | evaluating SDN vendors in a diligent manner.
