Hi All

As OpenStack Icehouse milestone 1 is now out, I thought it worth
updating everyone on Ubuntu activities during the Icehouse development
cycle.

For release, Ubuntu will be providing Icehouse packages for both
Ubuntu 14.04 and for Ubuntu 12.04 via the Ubuntu Cloud Archive (see
[0]). Right now, icehouse-1 can be tested either using the current
Ubuntu development release (trusty) or using the icehouse-proposed
pocket in the Cloud Archive for Ubuntu 12.04, which can be enabled on
Ubuntu 12.04 systems by running:

     sudo add-apt-repository cloud-archive:icehouse-proposed

The packages are currently a straight refresh of the Havana packages
with any mandatory changes for Icehouse; expect more changes between
now and Icehouse milestone 2, including switching to the ML2 plugin in
Neutron as default and some re-jigging of the nova-compute-* packages
to make installs for off-host non-libvirt hypervisors a little easier
(see [1]).

You can report any bugs on these packages on 12.04 and trusty using
the ‘ubuntu-bug’ tool, for example:

    ubuntu-bug neutron-server

Other notable upgrades alongside Icehouse include new versions of qemu
(1.7.x), Ceph (0.72.x) and Open vSwitch (2.0.x). If you are using
Ubuntu trusty, you won’t need to use the openvswitch-datapath-dkms
package any longer - the 3.12 kernel currently shipping supports both
GRE and VXLAN overlay networking via the in-tree openvswitch kernel
module.

In addition to the milestone packaging that the Ubuntu Server team
pushes to the development release and the Cloud Archive, you can
always test with the latest trunk build packages and dependencies
using the OpenStack Ubuntu Testing PPA:

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:openstack-ubuntu-testing/icehouse

This PPA publishes packages for 12.04 and trusty as well. They are
bleeding edge so may not always work - but hey - some folks like to
live on the edge!

Enjoy and happy testing!

James (on behalf of the Ubuntu Server Team)
