[Openstack-track-chairs] What's the presentation selection process?

Hi Yih,

On the contrary! Each Track Chair of the „Telecom & NFV Strategy” track made his own personal selection. Based on that and on further discussions via email we quite nicely agreed among ourselves, adding afterwards the sessions to the final team list.

We took into account multiple factors. For example, topic coverage (requirements-focused, containers, service assurance, cloud-native apps on 5G and telco interoperability), # of panels, and speaker/company diversity.

All in all I think both of our tracks carried a very similar and expected selection approach.

Thanks,
Carlos

I'm not sure if i interpret correctly on your email, seems like you are indicating that your group of track-chair didn't arrange a meeting to discuss Team list?

In our track, we have two stages (we have been doing this for few Summits):
1. Each individual track-chair make our own list of personal selections.
2. We organized an 1-hour online-meeting to discuss our preferences and made the final "team list". We have 4 persons in our track. In general, we first rank those proposal based on track-chair-selected choice. Those proposal with 3 or 4 track-chair-selected will go into the Team list. Then we look at those with 2 or 1 track-chair-selected choice and discuss which should go into the remaining Team list.

That explains a few things -- thanks, Jimmy!
It is also clear to me now that there was no additional selection stage after the “final team list” put together by the Track Chairs.

As feedback to further improve transparency and facilitate a better and faster agreement between Track Chairs:

- I’d suggest that only sessions with majority of personal selections could make to the final team list, i.e. democratic selection process. Because, for example, one can add a session directly from his/her “Interested” list to the team selection list.
- In addition to existing mechanism that automatically leaves a comment when a session makes to team selection, a comment when one is removed would also be useful.

Carlos,

The "Telecom & NFV Operations" track was one of the first to be finalized, but it was done while we were tracking a bug in building the list. Until March 8, the "final team list" was listed under Beth Cohen's personal selections. I swapped the lists on March 8 so that everything was listed in the correct spot. Additionally, per the Track Chairs for this same track, two presentations were merged.

Email from Track Chair Beth Cohen detailing this:

Folks -

The Telecom Track Chair team got together and chose our selections.
Unfortunately there is something wrong with the list as you can see from
the attached snapshot. The correct list is all the ones that are marked
as Yes by Beth Cohen and have a comment that the team selected it. We
would also like to rank them to show the correct alternatives.

Thank you in advance for looking into this.

Was there some other issue you heard of?

Thanks,
Jimmy

Hey Erin,

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I observed two changes in the “Telecom & NFV Operations” track. One presentation was demoted from the team selection list, and one promoted to team selection list despite having zero personal selections. These changes were made between March 6 (afternoon, CET) and March 9 (evening, CET).

Regards,
Carlos

Hey Carlos,

We moved over Track Chair final selections exactly as they were in the track with a couple of minor exceptions where speakers already dropped out and we had to move alternates in place. Is there some specific track you're referencing that had problems? Please feel free to reach out to us with the presentations and tracks and we will take a look.

Thanks!

Hi,

Could someone from the OpenStack Foundation clarify what is the presentation selection process, in particular the final stage?

My understanding until a few hours ago was that the track chairs (empowered by the Foundation) had the last word, or at the very least their feedback would be highly weighted in. Same for community vote and popularity score.

The final selections for the “Telecom & NFV Strategy” track had not been touched, but others seem to have been.

Thanks,
Carlos
