There are a number of us working on OpenStack Federation in a variety of contexts - from public cloud through to private including HPC installations. There’s a ton of useful information about this, including examples, in chapter 6 of the book linked here: https://www.openstack.org/science -- -Nick From martialmichel at datamachines.io Tue Feb 6 01:01:50 2018 From: martialmichel at datamachines.io (Martial Michel) Date: Mon, 5 Feb 2018 20:01:50 -0500 Subject: [Openstack-sigs] [Scientific] IRC meeting today Message-ID: Hello All - We will have our IRC meeting in the #openstack-meeting channel at 2100 UTC today. At that meeting, three community members volunteered to run the k8s-sig-openstack group. * Chris Hoge, hogepodge, from OpenStack Foundation (myself). * David Lyle, david-lyle, from Intel. * Robert Morse, rjmorse, from Ticketmaster. One of major decisions made at the meeting was to strongly link the OpenStack/K8s SIGs, making them the same organization spanning across both communities. The reasoning behind this was to keep the work on integration and testing focused while being able to leverage community available resources across both communities. The final step in this process is to have final SIG approval on the OpenStack side. Other major goals included: * Moving the OpenStack provider out of the main K8s tree as part of a K8s community initiative to remove all providers. Dims is leading up this work, and is maintaining a mirror of the upstream code[0]. At some point in the near future this repository will be moved under OpenStack code management. * Improve testing of the OpenStack provider. Initial work is being done by myself working with the CNCF/CICD team[1]. We are also working of efforts to integrate zuul-based testing into both the OpenStack gate and as a third-party CI in the K8s gate. * Documentation updates, including removing out-of-date installation instructions and replacing it with a common set of best-practices and suggested deployment products. Full meeting notes are available[2]. Bi-weekly meetings are ongoing, and are on alternating Thursdays at 00:00 UTC [3]. Our next meeting is this Thursday, and anyone interested in the SIG activities is encouraged to attend. This is the first of weekly SIG updates to the OpenStack-SIGs mailing list. A formal pull request for SIG creation has been submitted. Comments and updates to the patch are welcome[4]. Thanks! I'm quite sorry I haven't been able to attend the last few public cloud meetings, have been deep in various bits of work, and been very asleep when the meetings normally were. That said, I have some interesting things some of you might like to play with: https://github.com/catalyst-cloud/adjutant-mfa The above is a collection of plugins for Keystone, Horizon, and Adjutant that help facilitate MFA on an OpenStack cloud. Note, that while this is a working solution, it isn't merged or part of anything official upstream, just using the various plugin mechanisms. It uses existing pieces of working logic, and does nothing that isn't able to be migrated from. My plan for the Rocky cycle is to work in Keystone and address the missing pieces I need to get MFA working properly throughout OpenStack in an actually useful way, and I'll provide updates for that once I have the specs ready to submit (am waiting until start of Rocky for that). The good thing, is that this current solution for MFA works, and it can be migrated from to the methods I intend to work on for Rocky. The same credential models will be used in Keystone, and I will write tools to take users with TOTP credentials and configure auth rules for them for more official MFA support in Keystone once it is useful. We will be deploying the above MFA solution in our cloud in the next Month, and I'll provide you some updates as to how that goes, but do play with it yourselves, and tell me what you think. The solution does require technical domain knowledge to setup, but the docs in the above repo should hopefully be straightforward, if not, get in touch and I can help. I hope to have some other useful bits of 'missing public cloud features' updates for you soon too. The major highlights of our work coming into the Kubernetes 1.10 release include: 1. Preparing the external OpenStack provider for migration into OpenStack infrastructure. 2. Removal of experimental Keystone authentication code in upstream in favor of community maintained interfaces and web hooks. 3. Integration of K8s e2e testing with the OpenStack provider in CNCF/CICD 4. Building out third-party integration testing in OpenStack Infra and OpenLab. If you have other items to address in the update, please contribute them in the planning etherpad[0]. 1. External OpenStack Provider ------------------------------ Dims has been maintaining a fork of the upstream K8s OpenStack provider in his openstack-cloud-controller-manager (OCCM) archive[1]. The major point for K8s/OpenStack integration are documented in the repository, with options including[2]: * Using the upstream provider (planned deprecation in 1.11 release). * Using the external provider with the Cloud Controller Manager. Working scenarios include: * External LBaaS with Neutron LBaaSv2 * Internal LBaaS with Neutron LBaaSv2 * LVM / iSCSI with Cinder * Ceph / RBD with Cinder * Keystone authentication and authorization with webhooks. * Cinder as a standalone volume provisioner. * Cinder with a Flex volume driver. * Cinder with a CSI driver. One major work item for the sig-k8s at the PTG will be in moving OCCM under OpenStack management. The OCCM code includes the full author and version history from the Kubernetes repository, and all of the code is Apache licensed. This is a public notice that the code is being migrated to OpenStack management. Included in this migration will be the need to establish gate jobs. Automating single-node Kubernetes on top of DevStack with conformance testing is a first high-priority testing task. 2. Removal of experimental Keystone Authentication Code ------------------------------------------------------- Experimental Keystone Authentication code was removed from upstream K8s[3]. Webhooks in the OCCM, along with an upstream kubectl auth provider[4] are the suggested methods for performing Keystone authorization and authentication from Kubernetes. Savero Proto has documented how to use Keystone authentication in Kubernetes in a post on the Switch blog[5]. 3. K8s on OpenStack End to End Testing in CNCF/CICD --------------------------------------------------- Work continues on nightly automated end-to-end (e2e) testing of K8s on OpenStack using the upstream OpenStack provider. Initial provisioning code was merged in December in the cross-cloud repository[6]. I met with the CNCF/CICD team on Tuesday to get a status on testing. There are still some issues with reliably provisioning load-balancers, and more work needs to be done make the provisioning robust and ready for e2e tests. This will be another work item leading into and at the Dublin PTG. We have two tracking issues within the Kubernetes and Cross-Cloud repositories[7][8] 4. Third-party integration testing in OpenStack Infra and OpenLab ----------------------------------------------------------------- In addition to the testing goals for the OCCM in infra as part of standard gate jobs and nightly test jobs with CNCF/CICD, we also have a goal of building out third-party jobs within the K8s test infrastructure suitable for gate testing. This is open work for which we are seeking volunteers to contribute to it. Before and at the PTG we would like to with with the Zuul team, OpenStack infra teams, and OpenLab teams to work out options for hosting, triggering, and reporting of third-party test jobs. Dublin PTG ---------- openstack-sig-k8s will have a work session at the Dublin PTG, on Tuesday February 27. We have an etherpad set up for scheduling work items[9]. In the weeks before the PTG, please add agenda suggestions to the etherpad. Thanks! The idea is to give recognition to those that are undervalued, don't know their are appreciated, bind the community together, keep things fun, or challenge some norm. It can be someone that does a dirty job no one wants to do, someone that steps up into an new role, or someone that is new to the community but giving it their all. Basically nominate anyone you think deserves an award :) [1] There are A LOT of people out there that could use a pat on the back and affirmation that they do good work for the community. Please submit your nominations by *May 14th. * Winners will be announced at the feedback session in Vancouver. -Kendall Nelson (diablo_rojo) [1] https://openstackfoundation.formstack.com/forms/cca_nominations_vancouver -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This SIG is still very young, so it's a great chance for you to shape the direction it takes :-) If you are able to attend, please add your name, and also feel free to add topics which you would like to see covered. It would be particularly helpful if operators could participate and share their experiences of what is or isn't (yet!) working with self-healing in OpenStack, so that those of us on the development side can aim to solve the right problems :-) Thanks, and see some of you in Dublin! The 2nd item is a lot more complicated and will take time to define and implement. The 1st one is feasible and can be achieved in reasonable time. This also depends on the type of issues. For example, networking issues could be difficult to monitor and recover. This message is to formally request for the WG to be wrapped up (since it is under UC governance) and also to share relevant information with the Meta-SIG team... We believe that relatively recent changes in the OpenStack community (within the last year) allow for objectives such as cross project coordination/collaboration, WG/Project team collaboration, and building multi-release directional guidance in a distributed manner across our community. This means that most of the goals of the product working group charter now have better avenues for delivery than within the group itself. The three major goals for the Product Working Group were: - Creating a community-generated multi-release roadmap - Collect feedback and aggregate requirements from our user-base and the various 'markets' where OpenStack clouds have been adopted - Plan, prioritize, coordinate, and track implementation of development proposals Each of these goals is being pursued through various structures and initiatives within the OpenStack community at this point: - The PWG roadmap sub-team was spun off from the Product Working Group and is being led by Anne Bertucio from the OpenStack Foundation (this team is looking for more volunteers, so please let Anne know if you are interested!) - The forum event allows for both individual teams and SIGs to discuss requirements directly with stakeholders and users - The advent of SIGs allows for greater collaboration between developers, operators, users, and other stakeholders within the same group. - Cross-project efforts that require collaboration between teams to deliver a capability can be facilitated through the SIG construct and things that we would like to see adopted across all projects can be addressed via release goals. The development proposal workflow we created within the PWG, we believe, could provide SIGs with a useful framework on how ideas can be taken from concept to implementation in a repeatable manner. If the Meta-SIG is interested in learning more about the workflow, the core members from the PWG would be glad to join a meeting to discuss the workflow and help transition it to the Meta-SIG. Please let us know! The core members of the Product Working Group would like to thank everyone who contributed in this working group (including OpenStack Foundation staff) and helped pave the way for a successful exit! It has been an amazing journey over the last 3 years and we want to thank the OpenStack community for working with us along the way and making this a rewarding experience. Make sure you and your team are on time so we can stay on schedule. For teams that are less than 20 people, we will be taking the pictures on the side of the pitch and for the teams that are over 20 people, the pictures will be taken in the stands. As a reminder, NO ONE is allowed on the grass so please do not step directly on the pitch when we take the pictures.
