Kendall indicates she'd like to see Operators involved as much as devs. I
kind of agree--we're going to keep growing OpenStack with operations so
there will always be newbies to First Contact.

Subject: [Openstack-sigs] [First Contact] New SIG: Let's get this party
To: openstack-sigs at lists.openstack.org

In support of Zhipeng's first email[1] and a chat he and I had the other
day[2]. I went ahead and started to formalize this SIG.

I created an entry in the SIG table[3]. I also created a specific wiki page
for the First Contact SIG[4].

At this stage it would be great to get a list going of people interested in
being points of contact for newcomers and what timezones those people work
in so its easier to figure out who they should talk to.

I think it would also be beneficial to start collecting links and
resources- contributor portal, Mentoring wiki, Upstream Institute,
Outreachy(?) etc to link to on the First Contact wiki page.

As we discussed in the forum session around this SIG[5], it might also be
good to get representatives and a chair more from the ops side of things so
that we have more than one type of involvement- not just code/doc
contribution- covered.

As far as a mission statement sort of thing, I just threw something
together and am 100% interested in feedback. Pasted here from the SIG Wiki
and First Contact Wiki:

To provide a place and group of people for new contributors to come to for
information and advice. New contributors are the future of OpenStack and
the surrounding community. Its important to make sure they feel welcome and
give them the tools to succeed.
