Hi,
I thought I'd *try* to summarize some of the results of the
telecom/nfv session at the NYC Ops session. The etherpad for that is
available [1].
First, we had about 18 people in the room which was about 15 more than
I expected, so that was great. :)
>From a short poll of hands it seemed that about 12 of those 18 were in
the room just kind of wondering what NFV is, how it relates to
OpenStack, etc. (Anyone in the room, correct me if I'm wrong on that.)
So we went into a good discussion on various NFV concepts.
One surprising thing was that several people knew of a particular port
security bug [2] (which, created in 2013, has recently been fixed) .
For better or worse, some specific NFV deployments are relying on
turning off port security, which is seems very few OpenStack
deployments do.
During the session I also learned that Monasca can work with Heat
autoscaling, which is quite interesting.
>From the other parts of the meetup I learned some interesting things as well:
- The use of OVN by some OpenStack Operators
- Ironic enrolling existing nodes
- Ironic being able to set ACLs on top of rack routers that support OVSDB
- The suggestion of an Ironic feature for it to able to manage network
gear, perhaps with ONIE
- The close relationship between NFV-land fault management
requirements and more common issues like dealing with compute node
failures
Thanks to all who came out, and a reminder that the OpenStack
Operators Telecom-NFV team meets every couple of weeks [3], so if you
can spare some time please come on out to the meeting and help us get
some momentum. The ops midcycle certainly gave me some good ideas as
to what mid to long term projects this team can perhaps work on.
If anyone had any other Telecom/NFV related inspiration from the
midcycle, please let us know!
Thanks to everyone who arranged and participated in the midcycle,
Curtis.
