[Openstack-operators] Advice on setup for a test rig

Good Evening All,
I'm decided to look more into open stack, and generally the capabilities and how to operate an open stack cloud.
I'm in charge of about 200 collocated systems, and I think it would be a great idea virtualise the current environment, and then one I've got them running in my own cloud, begin to use the same tools to migrate the systems over Rackspace. - That's the dream anyway, to have some sort of hybrid cloud and a universal management console for the lot.
Before I get to that stage, I think I need to first get my own cloud up and running. Virtualisation I can do, migrating systems, I can do, running a cloud - that's new. I guess my first, and only question at this point would be;
* How many machines do I need at a minimum to get up a working cloud environment, run and managed by a open stack setup?
Basically, I want to setup a rig - just for my own understanding before I even begin to start of hosting a production environment in a cloud. Then I intend as a phase 2 to add more hardware, and test migrating VM between them, before finally phase three, which will be having a hybrid setup.
Any hints and tips would be very much appreciated.
