I suspect Monty's point is that "backups" should be taken care of
automatically by the cloud database infrastructure ?

I don't really know what the DBaaS offerings currently support, but if
their backup function is done properly maybe we can leverage it for
proper backups covering your design goals... (which may involve
additional copying of backup data to another provider).
