Matt, I have mix feelings with this picture. On one hand I like it because it shows the multiple components and the relations between them but on the other one I do like your point about making it simpler and not scary for users, maybe this one could be use for developers only. In the architecture chapter, figure 1.1 contains a reasonable amount of information although it could use some updates.
