[Openstack-docs] What's Up Doc? May 24, 2013

Hi Anne, Lorin, and Andreas,
I'm working on the first draft of the OpenStack User Guide as we speak (and I'm using the SUSE End User Guide as a model – love it!)
I need another week or so to determine whether we could share files using conditional text or a replacements config file. I'll write back to the list once I have a better idea of how different the two guides are.
Diane

Agreed on what Lorin said -- thanks Andreas for pointing it out to us.
I do agree with the overlap. One idea for collaboration - bring it into the openstack-manuals repo and use conditional output for the screenshots for the SUSE Cloud dashboard, output two different guides, like we do for install guides. Does that make sense? It might get translated quicker by being in the OpenStack ecosystem. It's definitely a document we could then expand upon with tutorials and use cases.
How would you like to share the XML source? Do you think conditional markup is worth the effort to single-source the guide for different dashboard screenshots?
I do have to compliment the writer or writers on the organization and clarity of these guides. Well done.

Hi Andreas:
It's great to see this content. In particular, I'm really happy to see a SUSE-specific deployment guide. The doc team is trying to transition away from writing deployment documentation, because it's so distribution-specific.
Take care,
Lorin

Hi Anne, Diane and the rest of the docu team,
I'm part of SUSE's cloud team and talked with my colleague Tanja Roth from the SUSE documentation team this week and wanted to followup with all of you after my vacation (which starts now and goes for two weeks). But your nice summary contains one point where I think I should answer directly:

2. High priority doc work:
Diane's working on a user guide, as part of the refactoring. Please
review the outline at
https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Blueprint-os-user-docs#Summary. I've
given her (way too many) ideas for use cases, but more are welcomed as
we shape this new deliverable.
We at SUSE have released our SUSE Cloud - which is a distribution based on OpenStack - and have three manuals available, you can see all of them at:
https://www.suse.com/documentation/suse_cloud10/
There's also a user guide - and looking at the blueprint and at the table of contents of SUSE's guide, I see a lot of high level overlap. Thus, I wanted to point this out to everybody so that you can discuss whether and in which way collaboration is possible.
The SUSE Documentation is under the Apache license and we can share our XML sources for them,
Andreas
