I think Gnocchi API is very handy, the resource, metric and measure hierarchy is well designed. 
Using a default Ceilometer configuration Measures class in [1] does everything we need to monitor the utilization data. 
If Ceilometer is configured to save memory_util and disk_util it will be even easier. 
We will soon add checks if these x_util data are in gnocchiclient.metric.list. 

By the way I realized that a host typed resource's hardware.disk.size.total and hardware.disk.size.used metrics are collected with value 0 every time. 
But host_disk typed resource's have meaningful values. This happens with the default configuration of Ceilometer.
