To clarify, do you mean use release branches from the upstream repos? 
Because if DefCore is supporting 2 years of releases, that's going to 
conflict with the 18 month lifespan of branches upstream, i.e. kilo is 
already EOL. So backporting to stable/juno or stable/kilo at this point 
isn't possible, at least in the official openstack repos.

And backporting features to stable branches would break our stable 
branch policy.
