I use the remind utility and the console-based frontend wyrd:

Both are packaged in Debian for ages, probably many other distros as
well. Get up with me if you want details on how I tie it into tmux
window highlighting in my personal workflow (an almost-one-liner
shell script to echo a bell into the window where I leave wyrd
running).
