I would like to announce my candidacy for the Technical Committee this
term.

Background
=========

I began working on OpenStack more than two years ago. Initially, I focused
on improving Nova's database API and led the Nova DB team in that cleanup
effort for a time. As much of that work was finished or transitioned to
other capable hands, I began worked on the Nova "baremetal" driver and
helped to start the TripleO project. At the Havana summit, I proposed that
this driver be split into its own project, and for the last year I have
served as the PTL for Ironic.

Platform
======

OpenStack is not merely a collection of open source software that,
together, provides a cloud; it is the open community which creates and
supports that software. While being open and encouraging new contributions,
that developer community, led by the TC and the PTLs, has a responsibility
to ensure the quality of the resulting software. OpenStack must be
scalable, maintainable, and easy to install, and I believe it must also
look and feel cohesive to operators and end-users, even if, under the hood,
it is a collection of loosely coupled parts. Diversity in projects is good,
as is a healthy PaaS ecosystem, but divergence away from common operational
tooling makes it more difficult for both contributors and operators.

Over the last 6 months, the TC has codified integration and testing
requirements, both raising the bar for new projects and making the path to
integration clearer. Some integrated projects do not meet those standards
yet, and work is underway to remedy that. I would like to see this
continue, leading towards greater consistency across all integrated
projects.

I believe that the greatest barrier to entry for our users is the
complexity of installing an OpenStack cloud; addressing this is the primary
reason that I'm working on Ironic and TripleO. Similarly, I believe the
greatest barrier to entry for new projects is integration with the
community of existing projects, and given my role as PTL for Ironic, I
believe that I bring a unique perspective to this discussion. In this
cycle, I would like the TC to be more involved in individual projects'
technical considerations than it historically had been, particularly during
the incubation process where guidance can have the most positive effect on
a young project.

Whether I am elected or not, I will continue working towards these goals.
It has been, and continues to be, a pleasure to work with such a vast and
vibrant community.
