[Win The Enterprise-wg] PayPal internal private cloud runs on OpenStack

I actually do have the inside scoop on this.

I used to work for a VAR that did their rack builds a few years ago to the tune of 60+ racks delivered annually. We delivered them to the DC floor pre-integrated, Mirantis helped provision them with a flavor of OpenStack that was somewhat built on the earliest versions of Fuel. At the time I left that company, eBay and PayPal were hard at work building containerized data centers which would change the model completely.

Mirantis and PayPal had a mutually beneficial relationship at this time. Over time, that relationship changed. In 2011, just before the Summit, Boris Renski (Mirantis) made a statement that PayPal was moving 80,000 servers from VMWare to OpenStack and had a $2B valuation hit on the VMWare stock overnight. He wasn’t far from the truth, but nobody would have admitted it at that time.

This slip severely hurt the relationship between the two companies, and it was around this time that PayPal started to look to do things on their own.

If you search for jobs at PayPal or eBay today, you see they are looking for architects, software engineers and QA engineers to submit blueprints, lead development/design efforts and code within the OpenStack ecosystem to deliver application infrastructure for the PayPal and eBay teams.

Last I heard, 4,100 physical boxes in PayPal and 8,500 total (when you combine eBay Marketplace) run on OpenStack.

Hi Tyler,
I read the Forbes article for background (http://www.forbes.com/sites/benkepes/2015/03/24/good-bye-vmware-hello-openstack-paypal-axes-virtualization-giant/). It’s an interesting read for its analysis of the potential impact on VMware.

Both articles say that PayPal is contributing code to OpenStack. So, it appears that they have an in-house effort rather than buying some one’s distro. However, that is a guess since contributing code doesn’t preclude PayPal from also using someone’s distro or Mirantis from helping them via consulting.

All,
Does anybody have inside scoop?

Regards,
Michael

I was under the impression that Mirantis was involved.

Hi Dilip,
The article seems to indicate that it is an in-house effort.

Michael

Yes impressive (also published by Forbes). Would be interesting to know ...
- which OpenStack release is deployed? commercial or built in-house?

Thanks
Dilip

All,
Sending just in case people haven’t seen the article yet. Sri Shivananda, Vice President, Global Platform and Infrastructure, PayPal posted an article yesterday to the PayPal community. Their internal private cloud runs on OpenStack. It’s a nice proof point, see:
