[baremetal-sig][ironic] Future of baremetal-sig

Stackers, An item came up in the Ironic meeting today regarding the future of the baremetal sig. Essentially, Arne was doing great work sourcing talks for it, but now he's going to be unable to continue hosting it and proactively sourcing talks. (A seriously big thanks is owed to Arne for doing a great job on this!) This led us to wonder if BM SIG in its current form remains sustainable. Some options we can consider include: - Keep the BM SIG as-is, cancel it months where there's not a talk available. - Change the BM SIG meetings to more of a meetup style for operators to talk about Ironic - Something else entirely we haven't thought about yet. What do you all think? - Jay Faulkner

In my opinion, the sooner we cancel, the better we can focus on organizing the virtual meetings, and also we can influence more communities to take that kind of decisions. [oslo] Schedule for the rest of 2019

Hi, I said in the meeting I would send this out Monday, but then I didn't. Sorry. :-) I mentioned I was probably going to be out some this week and it looks like I'll be taking the afternoons off. How many? Who knows! Planning is really hard right now. Probably at least the rest of this week, and possibly into next week. So TLDR: If you need to get ahold of me, do it in the morning. I may not be available after that. I also expect the 20th to be my last working day for the year, so I'm going to take this opportunity to cancel the Oslo meetings on the 23rd and 30th. We'll resume in the new year on the 6th. Thanks. -Ben

There was interest in consolidating activities, and as a first step we agreed to drop our separate Large Scale SIG meeting to join the Ops Radio Hour instead. I will remove our meeting from the agenda and push documentation changes to redirect to the Ops Radio Hour instead. Hi, all I think the Openstack community has more virtual collaboration experience than any other community and maybe it's a good chance for us to establish an efficient way to make a virtual summit. I'm not alone thinking virtual summits/webinars/whatever are much less efficient than in-person meetings and hanging out together. But in current circumstances, it doesn't seem like an option, so why not try brainstorm about how we still can do a virtual summit and get most of it? Main issues with virtual meetings that I can see are: - topics discussions in a big group of people, while virtual meetings often less convenient and sometimes are tough[1] - the important things happen also *between* sessions, not during them - what would replace booths (and swags of course)? - PTG project rooms which are used both for internal discussions and collaboration between various projects - informal mingling I'm not sure all of these and other issues can be easily replaced virtually, but who knows, maybe we can still make it work. Like maybe constant open video sessions which mimic rooms and booths, some of the discussions moved to dedicated IRC channels. On the flip side, the offline summit had restrictions as well, so we can do things in a virtual summit we couldn't (or couldn't do so much) in offline ones. Maybe more presenters will have a chance to make sessions since we are not so limited in time online and all sessions can be recorded as well. And we don't need a projector in every PTG room now :) I'd propose creating a page where people can put their ideas on how to make good things we have in the offline summit to be virtual or add something new, which couldn't be done in the offline summit. Since we created recently "Ideas for OpenStack" page[2], maybe it's a good candidate to hold these ideas in. Just reminding that Openstack is not the only project that cancels offline meetings and efficient virtual collaboration is a very hot topic right now all over the world. I think the Openstack community has all the resources to contribute from its experience to many other projects and companies and be leading in this area. WDYT? [tc][all] OpenStack Technical Committee Weekly Summary and Meeting Agenda (2025.1/R-23)

Hello Stackers, This week, the OpenStack community is convening virtually to set the agenda for the 2025.1 "Epoxy" release and beyond [1][2]. As of today, there are 33 different discussion tracks spread over five days. Now's as good a time as ever to review the Community Code of Conduct as we step into this event [3]. In the past week, the North American section of the OpenInfra community gathered in Indianapolis (and virtually) for a two-day conference. I had the privilege to attend in person and chat with numerous users, operators, and contributors. The community is as energetic as ever, as evidenced by the participation we saw in the leadership meet-and-greet event [4]. Amy Marrich (spotz) organized this event, and we had representation from the OpenInfra Board, Zuul, OpenStack TC, SIGs, and PTLs. The audience learned the essence of our "Open Community," how elections are conducted, what different community leadership roles are, and how one can participate in OpenInfra governance. We brainstormed how to revive projects with dwindling contributors and recapped takeaways from the "Bridging the Gap" and Security SIG-related discussions. Prof. Corey Leong (profcorey) from Valencia College volunteered to propose a "Higher Education" Special Interest Group focused on increasing awareness and creating learning material for university students interested in joining the OpenStack community. I'll share a link with video recordings of this conference in a future post. === Weekly Meeting === Dmitriy Rabotyagov (noonedeadpunk) chaired the weekly IRC meeting [5] of the OpenStack Technical Committee last week. We had fewer attendees than usual, but it was a productive discussion nevertheless. We prepped the TC's PTG etherpad [6] with topics and timings for the discussion. As is tradition, please allow flexibility in terms of the discussion schedule. Discussions may start a bit later (or earlier) than planned, and we'll have to be dynamic to accommodate scheduling conflicts, as many contributors are involved across multiple topics. In lieu of the PTG, the weekly IRC meeting scheduled for 2024-10-22 has been canceled [7]. We briefly discussed the leadership appointment patches concerning the Watcher and Mistral project teams. These are still being reviewed, and we'll try to get them closed out after the PTG week. We also discussed grenade job changes that Ghanshyam Mann (gmann) and other community members have been pursuing [8]. Concerns were raised about projects (like Kolla and Loci) publishing container images under the OpenStack name without a clear security policy. The need to clarify OpenStack's support and security posture on such deliverables was discussed. We have more to discuss on this topic at the PTG and beyond. The next weekly IRC meeting for the OpenStack Technical Committee is on 2024-10-29. The agenda is up early [9], but I'll write to you once again before it is formalized.
