The Diversity and Inclusion WG is still looking for your assistance in reaching and including data from as many members of our community as possible. We revised the Diversity Survey that was originally distributed to the Community in the Fall of 2015 and reached out in August with our new survey. We are looking to update our view of the OpenStack community and it's diversity. We are pleased to be working with members of the CHAOSS project who have signed confidentiality agreements in order to assist us in the following ways: 1) Assistance in analyzing the results 2) And feeding the results into the CHAOSS software and metrics development work so that we can help other Open Source projects Please take the time to fill out the survey and share it with others in the community. [all] What does mentoring mean to you?

Hey everyone, Ell has been blogging about her learning experiences for Linux Academy. These posts are really great, a good place to start is: https://linuxacademy.com/blog/docker/its-okay-to-be-new/ It got me thinking, mentoring means lots of different things to different people. For me, I didn't actually have any mentors early on in my career, it was a very solitary and often frustrating learning process. Those kinds of relationships came along much later and it was striking how much I got out of them and how much they would have helped if I had access to that kind of support and encouragement much earlier. It's made the mentoring relationships I have now that much more appreciated and important. So I got involved in mentoring initially through my local Linux Users Group, and now through the OpenStack community, because I'd like to help make it so that no one else has to be alone like that in their journey. It can be really hard to make that first connection, and to reach out and say "hey I could use some help". Luckily we have a really excellent community with a lot of different experiences and skills and backgrounds here in the OpenStack world, and you've all already taken that first step in saying "I want to be a part of mentoring!". So whether you're a mentor, a mentee, or both, I'd like to ask: What does mentoring mean to you? What do you hope to get out of a mentoring relationship? Cheers, Jill

Hi! I'm Cecilia. I've just arrived in the professional world and in the Openstack world. My first mission is about upgrading a 3 compute nodes and 3 infra nodes, from Newton 14.2.8 to at least Queens. Hi Everyone, I work over at Red Hat doing security work on OpenStack, primarily on Neutron and our SDN/NFV platforms. I'm most experienced with the networking related areas of OpenStack but am happy to help with general knowledge sharing and workflow mentoring! Feel free to push any questions about OpenStack networking out to the list and I'll do my best to assist, I'm based in NSW, Australia, which fluctuates between UTC+10 and UTC+11 based on DST. Howdy. I'm Eric Fried (rhymes with "feed"). In IRC I'm efried, or fried_rice on Fridays (it's our version of Hawaiian shirt day). You can find me in #openstack-nova (I'm a core reviewer on the Nova project), #openstack-placement (...who does a lot of work related to the Placement service), #openstack-powervm (...and gets a paycheck from IBM to make all of that work on PowerVM), as well as the shiny new #openstack-mentoring channel. I'm in Central Texas, UTC-6 except when DST is being stupid, and am generally online M-F 0730-1730 in my time zone. I joined this mentoring program to help new folks learn and understand the culture around reviewing and/or proposing patches. There's a lot to it that you can't read in the docs, and just like any new culture, it can be frustrating and discouraging until you get the hang of it. My mission is to ease your path through this acclimatization process so you can become a productive contributor who stays with us for the long term. I look forward to working with you. -Eric .

Hello all! My name is Jay Bryant and I am the Cloud Storage Lead for the Lenovo Cloud Technology Center. I am also the Cinder PTL and am active with OpenStack Upstream Institute. Most of my project activity has been in Cinder, Manila, Oslo and Documentation. I have been active in OpenStack since January of 2013 and have had the opportunity to mentor a number of people in becoming active OpenStack contributors. I am happy to answer questions about your first patch, first talk as well as questions about how to review patches or participate in other ways. Can even provide guidance in getting your accounts set up and CLAs signed. I am based in Rochester, Minnesota so I am at UTC -6. My IRC nick is jungleboyj .
