The meaning of a string to be translated
"Network Duration": What does "duration" mean? Is it equal to "usage time"? Daisy
Hi Daisy, I would suggest to ask it in openstack ML not in i18n list since only few folks who know details of a specific project are subscribing this list. I don't have an answer. I guess it means how long networks exist. If I have two networks for one hour, "Network Duration" will be two hours. It is just my guess. I haven't checked ceilometer code. Hi Daisy, "Ying Chun Guo" <guoyingc@cn.ibm.com>
"Network Duration": What does "duration" mean? Is it equal to "usage time"?
I believe this string is only seen in the Resources Usage statistics table, which is very confusing and actually doesn't make much sense [0]. There is currently a patch up [1] to remove the table entirely (including this string) which will likely be submitted also as a backport, to try and reduce the confusion. In the meantime, reading the bug report it sounds like perhaps the intention was to record average uptime - but even so, now the value doesn't make any sense. Hope this helps, Julie [0] https://bugs.launchpad.net/horizon/+bug/1249279 [1] https://review.openstack.org/#/c/57676/
Thank you for the explanation. I see "Network Duration" and "Port Duration" are still in the patch. Anyway, I will forward the email to dev list. Regards Ying Chun Guo (Daisy) Julie Pichon <jpichon@redhat.com> wrote on 2013/11/27 00:30:57:

Hi there, Any update on the strings containing "duration"? They still appear in Transifex - Icehouse/Juno Openstack Dashboard Translations. I know we should consider "duration" as "existence", but what do we do with Transifex translation strings? Do we leave them empty or are they going to disappear at some point? Thanks! Right, I see now that "duration" still exists in order to describe the different meter types and their description [1], although I can't quite tell where they are shown on the interface. I'm adding Ladislav to the cc: so he can perhaps help us to clarify this and also confirm that these descriptions are not going away and therefore should be translated? Thank you, Julie [1] https://github.com/openstack/horizon/blob/c1b4269443/openstack_dashboard/api...
Thanks! Marian
