Disabling translation sync for mitaka?
Hi, we're preparing the move to Xenial now in OpenStack CI and for those I wonder how to handle translations. We have these options: 1) We can continue to run mitaka on Trusty but that means work to split up jobs so that newton runs on Xenial but mitaka on Trusty. 2) We can disable mitaka on Trusty and only do Xenial jobs. 3) We can use translation setup for both newton and mitaka using Xenial. In addition, I'd like to disable the liberty documentation translation that we currently still have for OpenStack manuals. I can work on option 2 - but options 1 and 3 are more involved, if that is the overall preference, I will need help from others - especially in reviewing that everything works and fixing if needed. Can we go with 2 now? If not, which projects still get mitaka translation? Hello, The current translation plan in https://translate.openstack.org/ says that the due of translating install-guide for Mitaka is August. Korean team has recently finished translating install-guide for Mitaka. How about other teams? Also, I am a little bit worried if there are some changes on original documentation in stable/mitaka branch, changing translations would be also needed. So currently I think option 3 would be great. IMO Xenial is nice enough to cover both Neutron and Mitaka CI jobs for translation. Will there be other rationales to be considered? With many thanks, /Ian Andreas Jaeger wrote on 7/19/2016 10:50 PM:

+1 to option 3. Mitaka is the newest and available resources for users. Regards, KATO Tomoyuki

Is this only about Document translation? Or is there interest to continue translation of server and WEb UI projects?
So currently I think option 3 would be great. IMO Xenial is nice enough to cover both Neutron and Mitaka CI jobs for translation.

Please speak up. We have a plan how to do this for infra which involves quite some duplicating of the standard jobs - and I'd like to see what we can do here, Andreas
With many thanks,

I think most translation teams are not interested in translating server projects on stable branches too much. For web UI projects, although the volume of changes are not too much, some translators have contributed translations on stable/mitaka branch for several web UI projects. It seems that whether including translation on stable branches for web UI projects or not would be in a kind of cut-off region. IMO not including web UI projects is a good idea since the amount of translations are relatively small. Note that it is my personal opinion. If other teams are focusing on translations on server projects and/or web UI projects, please share with us :)
So currently I think option 3 would be great. IMO Xenial is nice enough to cover both Neutron and Mitaka CI jobs for translation.

Option 1 would be the worst among three options I think, since jobs are split to Xenial and Trusty and there will be two different management points, which will be complicated..
Andreas

Hi Ian, FYI. Led by Daisy (Ying Chun Guo), Chinese (zh_CN) team also finished translating install-guide for Mitaka. Thanks. On Wed, Jul 20, 2016 at 12:13 PM Ian Y. Choi <ianyrchoi@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi Will, You can check the translated guides[1]. Once Chinese (zh_CN) team complete the translation, you can publish them as official guides. To do so, you can submit a patch for "master" branch at "openstack-manuals" repo. www/zh_CN/index.html, www/draft/draft-index.html [1] http://docs.openstack.org/draft/draft-index.html KATO Tomoyuki

I'm not 100% certain I understand the request. With my stable hat on I'd *really* like to continue to translate messages in stable braches. I really appreciate knowing that backporting patches from master to mitaka that contain logged messages will end up with those messages translated.` How hard is option 1 to implement? Yours Tony.

It's possible to do - but will the team continue doing translations? The stable translations get less and less traction - and focus right now is on *documents*. So, I'd rather avoid setting something up that is unused. But 1 and 3 both allow translations to continue - and having seen Clark's changes, 1 looks easier than expected. But my expectation is that stable is string frozen, isn't that the case? You shouldn't change strings just for the fun of it... digging deeper, there's no need to change at all - translations sync is always done on a very specific long-lived node - the proposal node - and not on the usual ubuntu one-time nodes.
