[i18n][Weblate] Current Migration Status Wiki Page with Access Review
Hello all, As many of you know, the i18n SIG has been working on the migration from Zanata to Weblate with contributions from Seongsoo and many community members, including tooling and process work as documented on our migration wiki page. - https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/I18nTeam/Migration-to-weblate This has been an important and ongoing effort for our translation workflow with open communication. Following recent discussions regarding Weblate configuration [1], it has come to my attention that some administrative actions were taken privately, without visibility to other reviewers or co-admins. While the intent was operational alignment, this does not fully align with our open principles. To ensure proper management of administrative access and to re-establish transparency to move forward, I plan to take the following actions: 1. Revoke all existing Weblate administrator privileges so we can review and reassign them in a transparent and collaborative manner. 2. Conduct a full review of Weblate permissions considering roles such as translators, reviewers, language coordinators, core reviewers, infra team, supporters, and Weblate staffs to ensure balanced visibility, accountability, and continuity across ongoing i18n activities. Note that this is aligning with recent security-driven activities and infrastructure-related changes relevant to our environment [2]. I appreciate the community’s understanding and the continued efforts toward a successful and stable completion of the Weblate migration. Per-project records: [2]. - Five Weblate automatic fixups (trailing ellipsis, zero-width space, leading/trailing whitespace, Devanagari danda, punctuation spacing) must be disabled in AUTOFIX_LIST before the import, otherwise the Zanata translations get modified. Hi Ian, I have cleared out the remaining artifacts from previous test runs and am now attempting the migration. (It seems the Weblate instance resources are somewhat limited, as deleting projects caused the instance to experience downtime for an extended period, but the cleanup is finally complete now.) However, it appears that the permissions assigned to my account do not include project creation rights. I tried to fix it myself, but my token has no permission ( I contacted Weblate Support to ask why I cannot change the language settings with my current permissions. ) {"code":"permission_denied","detail":"Can not manage languages"} There are two problems. Both block the Zanata -> Weblate migration. [1] Plural forms do not match The migration tool fails to upload PO files: [ERROR] Upload rejected (400), not retrying: {"code":"invalid","detail":"Plural forms do not match the language."} The PO file and the server have different plural rules. Example, Gujarati (gu): PO file from Zanata : nplurals=2; plural=(n != 1) openstack.weblate.cloud : n > 1 <- different my test server : nplurals=2; plural=(n != 1) This is why we did not find it earlier. My test server has the same rules as the PO files, but the official server does not. So the test could not catch it. Thank you for the access review and for keeping Weblate administration transparent. Following up on this thread, here is the current status of the Zanata -> Weblate migration and a permission request for the next step.
Status (details on the wiki [1]):
- Migration verification is complete for all 64 target projects (54 languages): 60 can be migrated as they are, 4 (heat, heat-dashboard, manila, zaqar) have exception cases that we migrate as-is and will re-check afterwards. Per-project records: [2]. - Five Weblate automatic fixups (trailing ellipsis, zero-width space, leading/trailing whitespace, Devanagari danda, punctuation spacing) must be disabled in AUTOFIX_LIST before the import, otherwise the Zanata translations get modified. Examples are on the wiki page. - Zuul: openstack-zuul-jobs 991432 has merged; project-config 961499 and openstack-zuul-jobs 969379 are still under review [3][4].
Permission request:
To run the migration on openstack.weblate.cloud, I would like to ask for the permission to add new projects and to manage the projects created for the migration (categories, components, translation uploads) for my account (Weblate username: SeongsooCho). As the AUTOFIX_LIST setting has to be changed on the Weblate side, once the permission is granted I will contact the Weblate customer center and request the necessary configuration changes.
Once the permission is granted I will start right away and keep sharing progress on the wiki page and on this list. Feedback and concerns are welcome here.
