Hi, In Hong Kong there will be a design summit session to discuss translation tools: http://summit.openstack.org/cfp/details/169 >From our last round of evaluating tools, Pootle was a close second to Transifex: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Aqevw3Q-ErDUdFgzT3VNVXQxd095bF… To help make the design summit more productive, I have set up a simple test Pootle server so that we can examine it and answer any questions we might have before the design summit. You can log into the test server here: http://translate-dev.openstack.org/ I have done very little configuration of the system, I just wanted to get something up quickly for people to look at. I have imported nova, horizon, and openstack_dashboard as projects. Note that if you look at nova, the number of translated strings Pootle reports is less than transifex -- that's because Pootle has marked all of the fuzzy-matched strings as "needs work", and strings that "need work" don't count as being fully translated. One thing that I believed has changed since the last time we looked at Pootle is translation memory. Here are the current docs: http://docs.translatehouse.org/projects/pootle/en/latest/features/translati… Since that describes how it uses an external translation memory populated with open source software by default, I believe that also means that Pootle's performance in the "crowdsource" category may have improved as well. I'm also optimistic about the integration with Git. Here's the documentation: http://docs.translatehouse.org/projects/pootle/en/latest/features/version_c… It looks like we may have options for getting nice git commits out of this; it says a typical git commit message looks like this: Commit from GNOME Pootle by user Sipho. 80 of 100 messages translated (7 fuzzy). Also, from what I've seen, it should not be very difficult to integrate Pootle into the project infrastructure -- the deployment is fairly simple. Keep in mind this isn't a fully-formed proposal for a new system -- just a test server running a basic configuration so we can look into it and discuss it more at the Summit. Please feel free to log into the test server and play with it. After you log in, just let me know if you would like me to make your user an admin. -Jim

I18n team meeting tomorrow

Hi, We will have I18n team meeting at 0000UTC on Thursday (October 17th) in IRC channel #openstack-meeting. The time, we use Asia/America friendly time. Welcome to join the meeting. In the past 1 month, We have finished the busy Horizon translation. We completed 12 languages translations. That's great achievements. We will use this meeting to discuss our next work items. I have the following items in mind, and feel free to add the items in your mind too. * Evaluation of other possible translation tools * Discuss I18n policies to messages * Discuss translation timelines in a release cycle Let's meet tomorrow. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the need for translating API messages and log messages as IMHO it adds a lot more problems for app developers and log analysis tools, eg. a log analysis tool would be usable only for the locale it was developed for and break with _every_ update of the translations. As a translator myself I don't really want to check every system in existence if it uses my messages to do some sort analysis and often change the strings to more proper form in my language as reviews and feedback on the translation comes in - even though the original English string doesn't change at all. I feel that translating mostly computer facing stuff is just crying for bugs, weird issues popping up for users, API-s should be readable by humans, but translating them is a bit too far in my opinion. If I get it right the Message objects are supposed to move stuff around internally in a C/en locale, but we will still end up dropping translated messages to computers if the don't explicitly specify the locale which the request should use... Also, just to try to recap the discussion and try to state where *I think* we want to head with i18n/Messages, this is where I think we want to go in Icehouse. Make Message objects in oslo less magical by removing a lot of the magic string methods/operators from the class. This doesn't necessarily mean removing all of the "magic" operators (I think __mod__ is still necessary, as pointed out in the whiteboard of the blueprint.) I think some of the functionality is useful to developers when dealing with Messages and strings (unicode strings only hopefully.) The overall shift in direction should be to make projects more aware of the Message objects, and we need to change those to utilize them better instead of trying to make Messages work in all project cases. This was one of the biggest challenges of how it works today; trying to make a Message into a "string". Changing projects to expect/use Messages instead of strings/unicode is necessary if our goal is to make Messages less magical. Some of the changes that need to be done to realize this are outlined in the blueprint, but the big ones are: - needing a better defined public API for messages like the translate() function - needing to utilize unicode (more likely six.text_type) in all areas in OpenStack projects instead of strings (although we should be trying to do this already) - catch any Messages and resolve to unicode before they exit any OpenStack code Any feedback on the blueprint or ML would be appreciated. Regarding OpenStack Manuals

Hi, Just to let you know, I have just marked the following books to no longer accept translations: openstack-api-programming openstack-block-storage-admin openstack-compute-admin openstack-network-connectivity-admin openstack-object-storage-admin These books have been restructured during the Havana release. A lot of the content is the same, so we can keep them for translation memory - don't worry about any lost work! :) Will need to make some new "resources" in transifex. Regards, Tom

Horizon translation status update for Havana

Hi all, Thanks for your translation effort for Havana RC1 release. RC1 release starts and Horizon RC1 is coming soon. It contains translations of ~100% translated languages. I really appreciate your work!! == Extra translation request == Horizon made several number of fixes in RC1 phase and there are several changes in translation strings. I just synced POT files with the latest Horizon master repository and pushed them to Transifex. == Schedule for Havana Horizon RC2 (not determined yet) == I will request another Release Candidate (RC2) to import translations. The exact plan will be discussed with Gabriel, Horizon PTL from now. My current plan is to import translation updates at the middle next week. I will let you all know if there is an update. Action item: Transifex statistics API

Hi All, Unfortunately I won't be able to participate in the next meeting, due to timezone it will be 4 AM here. Anyway, from the last meeting, I have the following item: ACTION: gabrielcw to take a look at Transifex API to see if it's able to get the translators information. I searched the API docs and as Daisy and Katomo mentioned in the last meeting, there's the API to retrieve some information for projects, but not yet for translators work. http://help.transifex.com/features/api/#statistics So I asked their help desk about what we want, and happily they will soon be rolling out support for that: http://support.transifex.com/customer/portal/questions/1326867-translators-… In fact, by the answer it should be already available but is not.
