MMAP 2015 is organized by Software Engineering Department, Faculty of Automation, Computers and Electronics, University of Craiova, Romania "Multimedia Applications Development" Research Centre. It is a major forum for researchers and practitioners from academia, industry, and government to present, discuss, and exchange ideas that address real-world problems with real-world solutions. The MMAP 2015 Symposium welcomes submissions of original papers concerning all aspects of multimedia domain ranging from concepts developments to advanced technologies and innovative and theoretical applications. MMAP invites original previously unpublished contributions that are not submitted concurrently to a journal or another conference. Papers acceptance and publication will be judged based on their relevance to the symposium theme, clarity of presentation, originality and accuracy of results and proposed solutions. The aim of this meeting is to provide a platform for exchange of ideas between early-stage researchers, in Computer Science, PhD students in particular. Furthermore, the symposium will provide all participants an opportunity to get feedback on their studies from experienced members of the IT research community invited to chair all DS-RAIT thematic sessions. Therefore, submission of research proposals with limited preliminary results is strongly encouraged. Besides receiving specific advice for their contributions all participants will be invited to attend plenary lectures on conducting high-quality research studies, excellence in scientific writing and issues related to intellectual property in IT research. Authors of the two most outstanding submissions will have a possibility to present their papers in a form of short plenary lecture. FedCSIS a yearly international multi-conference organized by the Polish Information Processing Society (PTI) in cooperation with the IEEE Region 8, ACM Special Interest Group on Applied Computing, European Alliance for Innovation, Lodz ACM Chapter, Polish Operational and Systems Research Society - POSRS, Eastern Cluster ICT Poland, Mazovia Cluster ICT (further technical collaborations will be announced shortly). The field of agent technology is rapidly maturing. One of key factors that influence this process is the gathered body of knowledge that allows in-depth reflection on the very nature of designing and implementing agent systems. As a result, there is now significant knowledge on how to design and implement them. There is also a deeper understanding of the most important issues to be addressed in the process. Therefore, on the top-most level a progress in development of methodologies for design of agent-based systems can be seen. Furthermore, these methodologies are usually supported by tools that allow not only top level conceptualization but guide the process towards implementation (e.g. by generating at least some code). Next, it can seen that new languages for agent based systems are created, e.g. AML or API Calculus. Separately, tools/platforms/environments that can be used for design and implementation of agent systems have been through a number of releases, eliminating problems and adding new, important features. Resulting products are becoming truly robust and flexible. Furthermore, open source products (e.g. JADE) are surrounded by user communities, which often generate powerful add-on components, further increasing value of existing solutions. TOPICS ======================================= The Workshop primarily focuses on all aspects of the process that leads from the model of the problem domain to the actual agent-based solution. These aspects will cover both principled approaches and established practices of software engineering aimed at producing high quality software. In this context, research into the application of agent-based solutions to key challenges faced by software engineering (e.g. reduction of costs and delivery times, coping with a larger diversity of problems) will be of primary importance. ABC:MI Workshop welcomes submissions of original papers concerning all aspects of software agent engineering. Fwd: Scheduler Bypass

Hi, all. I'm new to OpenStack, so I apologize in advance if my question lacks relevance or sense. We are trying to build a cluster orchestrator for Big Data processing and one of the key requirements is the ability to place each computing task in each physical server. We have been trying to leverage this development with OpenStack, but, as far as I can see by the on-line documentation, the Nova interface does not allow users to specify the physical location (host) where VMs (servers) are created. Instead, this task is performed by the Scheduler, which has its own algorithms and policies. Even though we can try to customize the Scheduler, I was wondering if I could simply bypass it and tell Nova to create a VM on host X. I know this sounds like bad design, as we are violating the location transparency that OpenStack attempts to deliver, but this seems to me the only way to bring the computation to where the data is. Utility with Cloud services can already be achieved for compute, storage and communication resources but also for hosted software and data. UCC is the premier IEEE/ACM conference covering all areas related to Cloud Computing as a Utility. There is also increasing interest from commercial providers to offer business and revenue models around the services they offer. Understanding how these model could be used to provide utility for both users, intermediary brokers (aggregators) and providers will also be of interest for this conference. This will be the 7th UCC in a successful conference series. UCC is the premier IEEE/ACM conference covering all areas related to Cloud Computing as a Utility. There is also increasing interest from commercial providers to offer business and revenue models around the services they offer. Understanding how these model could be used to provide utility for both users, intermediary brokers (aggregators) and providers will also be of interest for this conference. This will be the 7th UCC in a successful conference series. Various virtualization technologies contribute to the overall picture in different ways: machine virtualization, with its capability to enable consolidation of multiple under-utilized servers with heterogeneous software and operating systems (OSes), and its capability to live-migrate a fully operating virtual machine (VM) with a very short downtime, enables novel and dynamic ways to manage physical servers; OS-level virtualization, with its capability to isolate multiple user-space environments and to allow for their co-existence within the same OS kernel, promises to provide many of the advantages of machine virtualization with high levels of responsiveness and performance; I/O Virtualization allows physical NICs/HBAs to take traffic from multiple VMs; network virtualization, with its capability to create logical network overlays that are independent of the underlying physical topology and IP addressing, provides the fundamental ground on top of which evolved network services can be realized with an unprecedented level of dynamicity and flexibility; the increasingly adopted paradigm of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) promises to extend this flexibility to the control and data planes of network paths. These technologies have to be inter-mixed and integrated in an intelligent way, to support workloads that are increasingly demanding in terms of absolute performance, responsiveness and interactivity, and have to respect well-specified Service- Level Agreements (SLAs), as needed for industrial-grade provided services. Indeed, among emerging and increasingly interesting application domains for virtualization, we can find big-data application workloads in cloud infrastructures, interactive and real-time multimedia services in the cloud, including real-time big-data streaming platforms such as used in real-time analytics supporting nowadays a plethora of application domains. Distributed cloud infrastructures promise to offer unprecedented responsiveness levels for hosted applications, but that is only possible if the underlying virtualization technologies can overcome most of the latency impairments typical of current virtualized infrastructures (e.g., far worse tail-latency). What is more, in data communications Network Function Virtualization (NFV) is becoming a key technology enabling a shift from supplying hardware-based network functions, to providing them in a software-based and elastic way. In conjunction with (public and private) cloud technologies, NFV may be used for constructing the foundation for cost-effective network functions that can easily and seamlessly adapt to demand, still keeping their major carrier-grade characteristics in terms of QoS and reliability. The Workshop on Virtualization in High-Performance Cloud Computing (VHPC) aims to bring together researchers and industrial practitioners facing the challenges posed by virtualization in order to foster discussion, collaboration, mutual exchange of knowledge and experience, enabling research to ultimately provide novel solutions for virtualized computing systems of tomorrow. Questions about porting StarCluster to OpenStack

Hi All, For those who don't know me I deployed and run the OpenStack cloud at MIT CSAIL (http://www.csail.mit.edu) I'm currently working with Justin Riley (address in the "To" header of this email) who's the primary developer for StarCluster [http://star.mit.edu/cluster/index.html] on porting StarCluster to OpenStack. We have some operational and use case questions before we get too far down the implementation rathole^H^H^H^H^H^H^H path. I've sent this to openstack-hpc and some select bcc's to get a sense of who might be interest and what opinions you have about how the port should be implemented. What is it? If your not familiar, StarCluster is is an open source cluster-computing toolkit for Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) released under the LGPL license. It has been designed to automate and simplify the process of building, configuring, and managing clusters of virtual machines on Amazon’s EC2 cloud. StarCluster allows anyone to easily create a cluster computing environment in the cloud suited for distributed and parallel computing applications and systems. It's main target audience is domain scientists who want to setup a SGE, Condor, Hadoop, and a few other sorts of cluster in "the cloud". Its current implementation is basically a config file driven CLI that uses locally stored ssh keys for managing running the cluster. It has a fair sized user community and people seem to like it, which is why one of my users introduced Justin and I so I could provide a place for Justin to work and my user could get StarCluster on our private cloud. Were is it at? The CLI "basically works" on OpenStack now, though so far no end-users have touched it so not quite ready for public beta. If you're really interested in early code I'm sure Justin will be happy to share if you ask nicely. He has also been working on a Horizon dashboard which would be an additional feature for the OpenStack version (there is no EC2 GUI). The BIG QUESTIONS? Do you think this is something that would be useful to your users? To enable full functionality in the Horizon dashboard the dashboard app needs access to a private key to access the running (virtual) cluster nodes as root. Waving hands over implementation details, and assuming you're interested in this functionality of you're this far into the email. Is storing key material a show stopper in your environment? In other words would you rather just fall back to the CLI with it's local ~/.ssh/id_rsa (or equivalent) for privileged operations? My Opinion... I don't like centrally storing crypto keys, but my horizon runs on my controller node so it is already a fairly privileged zone, and I don't necessarily trust my users to store their key material even as well as this could be done. So while a bit cautious about the details I think it is an acceptable risk in my (admittedly permissive) environment. Thoughts? -Jon

Looking for practical Openstack + Ceph guidance for shared HPC

Hello. A contingent of my organization, the Kno.e.sis Center @ Wright State University <http://www.knoesis.org/>, recently received a grant award which we intend to use to support a handful of mid-size HPC-style workloads (MPI <-- definitely, GPGPU <-- if possible/plausible) in addition to many mid-size IaaS-style workloads (MongoDB, Storm, Hadoop, many others). As a third layer, I'm playing with the idea of evaluating an elastic OpenShift Origin atop the same infrastructure. Approximately $400k to $500k will hopefully be available for this deployment, though exact numbers are not yet available to me. While I'm prepared to build a home-grown small-to-mid-size "classical" HPC, using modern hardware, and a smaller silo for home-grown Openstack for the minority stakeholders, I am hoping to find ways of making proponents of both workloads simultaneously happy, or close to it. That is, I would like to give my computer scientist users a friendly method of running their HPC-style jobs on a combined performance-tuned silo of Openstack. Doing so would load-balance the procured hardware and infrastructure with the users who want a Tomcat or a Virtuoso instance. I see a number of serious issues realizing such a goal. For example, the state of Infiniband vs. Openstack seems not quite ready/available/documented/accessible for such use in production, unless I'm just blind to the right blogs. The added myriad abstractions and latency virtualization might impose on an HPC task, not to mention cloud software defined networking (Quantum, especially when sans hardware acceleration), seem likely to really get in the way of practicality, economics and efficiency. That said, most of what we do here isn't HPC, so I believe such trade-offs can be agreed upon, if a reasonable job scheduling and workload management mechanism can be found and agreed upon by all stake holders, grant proposal majority (HPC) and minority (IaaS) alike. I get the impression from my readings that HPC-style deployment (separate from job queuing) against the EC2 API should work. I don't have a good feeling that the experience would be particularly friendly, however, without paying for closed source applications. I'm thinking a high-performance Ceph install would help bring up the storage end of things in a modern open-source CoTS way. I've not done specific research on Lustre + Openstack, but no reports of such a setup have presented themselves to me, either. These blue sky ideas matter nil, it seems, if a sufficiently-large high-performance production-quality Openstack deployment is beyond the funds to be allotted, which is something else I'm working on. I've built smallish but useful virt-manager, oVirt and Openstack environments here already, but none of them are enough for the very-important HPC job proposed for this grant. The scientist running the proposed computation gave me following information to clarify what would parity (for his job only) his experience running the computation with an external HPC service provider. - MPI - 20 Gbps Infiniband compute interconnect - 600 cores (those currently used are probably G4 Opteron 2.4 Ghz) - 4 GB RAM per core - at lest 2 TB shared storage, though I'm thinking we need much more for use by our general community - unsure of the storage networking topology We're in the shopping phase for this grant award and are still playing with ideas. It seems likely to snap back into an old-school HPC, at this time. I've fielded communication about our needs to a number of Openstack and hardware providers, on the hope that they can bring something helpful to the table. At CERN, we have similar interests and aims as you describe. We're running LSF on top of the cloud to allow legacy batch applications to use cloud resources as well as those who are talking directly to the cloud APIs. To track resources, we are setting up a dedicated batch project in OpenStack. These resources are accounted to the IT department. We then use the batch system accounting records to work out who has used what resources inside the 'virtual batch' system. We've also been experimenting with submitting batch accounting records into ceilometer in order to consolidate the reporting into a single technology. Where we are trying to find a good solution is regarding how to use spot market resources in our cloud. If we allocate out a quota to a project but they do not use the full resources, we want to be able to offer that quota to others on a low SLA (killed with little warning). This allows us to get our resource utilisation up while ensuring that projects can get the resources they're entitled to when there is a need. This is an interesting area to be getting a few sites together to share solutions. While IB and GPU seem to frequently discussed when it comes to openstack and HPC they are not so relevant in our HPC environment (3000 ish cores, each node connected via 1G, scaleout NAS storage, biomedical research, genomics, proteomics, statistics) ..... many other midsize shops may be have similar setups. We are just starting to look at openstack for a for a potential deployment with Ubuntu 14.04. We have good experiences using KVM for some of our resources. Some of the things we are hoping to get from openstack in the future are: * flexible partitioning of resources for special sauce software (hadoop, interactive HPC software) * self service for developers and scientists * allow research group that spans multiple research organizations (internal / external) controlled access to an isolated (virtual) datacenter (potentially with fisma compliance) * save images that researchers built for later use (reproducible in case someone asks how they got to this result) * chargeback for HPC resources for internal and external users * usage of idle resources for testing in Enterprise IT, VDI ,etc * compute fencing (as we are heading to 24 cores per box most of our multi threaded code can still only take advantage of 4-6 cores. This either leaves stuff idle or users step on each other on shared nodes ....cgroups is a bit of a pain to maintain. * checkpointing and restarting long running jobs (for prioritization and better protection against job failures). perhaps LXC containers as alternative to KVM (we use BLCR today but that community is quite small) * standardization of our infrastructure * potential participation in futuregrid, XSEDE, etc That's perhaps a lot to ask but we would be looking at a 2-3 year time frame. What I don't quite unterstand, how would one handle workload management. Currently we see people using SGE, moab, LSF and some slurm in classic HPC. Concepts like backfill, preemption fair share and such things are probably unknown to openstack? If so it would perhaps be acceptable to run a workload manager on a subset of always-on KVM systems or even baremetal for classic HPC. But how does one consolidate the reporting, billing, chargeback of 2 separate systems? Are there any efforts to integrate workload managers directly into nova? SGE and Slurm are both open source and would support everything we require. Or are folks thinking about writing something from scratch in python? This provides a pkey isolated multi-tenant environment. THat is basically a mellanox only solution. Like Brian said, Xen is the only way to go for GPU virtualization. You can do some really interesting things with the I/O architecture. We've been experimenting with both glusterfs and ceph. Both seem to perform decently well; we've managed to get the glusterfs setup going at 60 GB/s in aggregate with a pile of clients. There isn't good integration of all of the capabilities yet in mainline openstack, but this looks promising. Ceph looks like the mainline integration is better, but we haven't tried those things out yet. At the end of the day, you need to ask yourself why you want to accomplish this. If you're running a workload that is well suited to an HPC cluster, you should probably use one. If you need multi-tenancy, user control of system software, or need to run a workload poorly suited for a traditional cluster, then it is worth thinking strongly about. You'll end up needing to do a bunch of work though. It seems likely to snap back into an old-school HPC, at this time. I've fielded communication about our needs to a number of Openstack and hardware providers, on the hope that they can bring something helpful to the table. Call for Presentations: SC13 Dissertation Research Showcase and Early Research Showcase

Submissions are now being accepted for the two tracks of the Doctoral Showcase program: • The Dissertation Research Showcase track for Ph.D. students who will be graduating in the next 12 months, and • The Early Research Showcase track for Ph.D. and master’s students who are in the early stages of their research. Applications for Doctoral Showcase due July 31, 2013 Dissertation Research Showcase The dissertation research of Ph.D. students in high performance computing, networking, storage and analysis will be spotlighted in the Doctoral Showcase program. This track provides a venue for Ph.D. students who will be graduating in the next 12 months to present a summary of their latest and systematic dissertation research. It provides an opportunity to educate junior graduate students working in high performance computing areas. This program also provides an ideal opportunity for prospective employers in academia, research laboratories and industry to interact with prospective Ph.D.s. Students are asked to submit a two-page summary of their research, publications list and three slides on their major results for consideration by the Doctoral Showcase committee. These accepted Ph.D. students will be invited for presentations at the SC13 conference. Everyone attending the conference is encouraged to attend this program. Come to see the latest and greatest dissertation work done by tomorrow’s HPC experts. Early Research Showcase The Early Research Showcase track provides early-stage research students with an opportunity to present their research and engage with the SC community. This track allows students in the first three years of their Ph.D. to present promising early-stage research, while encouraging conversations with HPC experts. The format of this track is a lightening presentation round and a poster exhibition that will be co-scheduled with the Dissertation Research Showcase. The showcase invites both students who are researching computational techniques and high performance computing, and students applying computational techniques to their scientific domain. Students are asked to submit a one-page summary of their research. Participating students are encouraged to use the poster session as a forum to introduce new approaches, discuss new technology, learn about relevant literature or define future research goals. Everyone attending the conference is encouraged to attend this program to engage with future HPC experts and provide valuable feedback and learn about future research developments. The Early Research Showcase is an evolution of the Early Adopters Ph.D. Workshops (SC09 to SC11). Álvaro, I had tried to use straight PCI passthrough with our hardware and didn't succeed in getting the stock OFED drivers to initialize properly. It could be that because our cards have the updated SR-IOV firmware on them, that it was breaking this functionality. But no, we don't yet have anything we can share. Infiniband + Openstack?

Hi. I've been trying to get some simple/straight answers on IB for OpenStack for a few days now. It could well be that I've just been posting to the wrong list! ;) I'm considering a reasonably sized OpenStack deployment shortly (several thousand cores). One of the decisions I need to make centres around the type of interconnect I will use to connect the compute nodes, Swift objectstorage, shared storage, swift proxies et al. I have been heavily considering FDR infiniband for this task, but, from what I can see, IB has only recently become something one might consider stable for use in OpenStack. My peers are suggesting to me that I should just stick with 10GbE interconnects and be happy. In doing some background reading, it looks like somebody asked similar questions a year or two ago, and the general sentiment is that it'd work in IPoIB mode as just a very fast ethernet device, but it wouldn't really have any of the benefits of RDMA communication, or any such capability - and the issue at the time was that no python libraries had any understanding or concept of it. I'd like to hear the experiences of people who have or are using IB, or who have experiences with IB deployments. Thank you. --z

High bandwidth networking with openstack

I've finally finished my writeup describing the experiments that we performed using Openstack to drive a wide area 100 gigabit network. I've included all of the details for configuration and tuning, as well as speculation why we're seeing such good numbers. tl;dr: you can push a whole lot of network bandwidth out of an openstack deployment with kvm/virtio; we hit 98 gigabits peak with 10 instances across 50 ms of latency. Hi everyone: I'd like to know your opinion as nova experts: Would you recommend CephFS as shared storage in /var/lib/nova/instances? Hi JP, Sorry, I won't be able to join on the 10th. I think it'll be useful to take an action to make sure the HPC extensions (i.e. extra specs extensions and capabilities filtering) pushed into Folsom are properly documented in the OpenStack Admin Guide. I think it's not the case right now especially around how to specify off specs capabilities (nova.conf versus not nova.conf ?). For example, it's been said that key values for things like capabilities can be defined via host aggregates but it's not described how... Discussions and info around these topics are scattered and also the documentation is incomplete and lacking practical details.
