[placement][nova][cinder][neutron][blazar] Placement governance switch(back)
Placement has been a separate project with its own governance since Stein [1]. Since then, the main drivers behind the separation have moved onto pastures new and with Tetsuro sadly declaring his non- candidacy for the PTL position for Wallaby [2], we're left in the unenviable position of potentially not having a PTL for the Wallaby cycle. As such, it's probably time to discuss the future of Placement governance. Assuming no one steps forward for the Placement PTL role, it would appear to me that we have two options. Either we look at transitioning Placement to a PTL-less project, or we move it back under nova governance. To be honest, given how important placement is to nova and other projects now, I'm uncomfortable with the idea of not having a point person who is ultimately responsible for things like cutting a release (yes, delegation is encouraged but someone needs to herd the cats). At the same time, I do realize that placement is used by more that nova now so nova cores and what's left of the separate placement core team shouldn't be the only ones making this decision. So, assuming the worst happens and placement is left without a PTL for Victoria, what do we want to do? Stephen PS: Apologies if I missed other projects with an interest in placement. I did try to catch them all /o\ [1] http://lists.openstack.org/pipermail/openstack-discuss/2019-February/002575.... [2] http://lists.openstack.org/pipermail/openstack-discuss/2020-September/017494...

The officially sanctioned PTL-less option (distributed project leadership) still lists "Release Liaison" as the very first required role: <URL: https://governance.openstack.org/tc/resolutions/20200803-distributed-project... > I don't think I would discount the DPL option purely over a concern for lack of point person responsible for Placement's release activity. -- Jeremy Stanley

Run DPL with liaisons from the interested projects perhaps? :-)

Thanks Stephen for raising this.

I think that would be a nice exercise for the DPL concept. Cheers, gibi

I mentioned this on IRC, but just for completeness, there is another option: have the Nova candidate PTL (I assume there is just one) also apply for Placement PTL, and handle the 2 realms in a personal union. Ciao -- Luigi

As far as I know I'm the only nova PTL candidate so basically you asking me to take the Placement PTL role as well. This is a valid option. Still, first, I would like to give a chance to the DPL concept in Placement in a way yoctozepto suggested. Cheers, gibi

Bump. Do we 2-3 developers interested in running the Placement project in distributed project leadership[1] mode in Wallaby? [1] https://governance.openstack.org/tc/resolutions/20200803-distributed-project...

Thanks Brin Zhang for volunteering! We still need (at least) one volunteer for security liaison and one volunteer for TaCT SIG (infra) liaison. Anyone else interested in helping? -- Thierry Carrez (ttx)
Hi, Sorry for the top post but I want to give a summary where we are with the Placement governance question. During the PTG both the TC and the Nova teams discussed the situation. We decided if there is no volunteers for the rest of the needed liaisons until the end of the PTG then we move the Placement project under Nova governance. As we hit that deadline I've proposed the governance patch[1]. Cheers, gibi [1] https://review.opendev.org/#/c/760917 On Tue, Oct 13, 2020 at 11:34, Thierry Carrez <thierry@openstack.org> wrote:
