Horizon team, I recently picked up a few talented dev interns, and one of them is very interested in webdev and quite skilled. He will have up to 25 hours/week to devote to development tasks of my choosing over the 8 months or so, and I'd like to offer him up as someone who can spend all of his time working with the horizon team on horizon.next (npm-based). We rely on horizon heavily internally, and a better experience for the end-user is pretty high on our list (particularly performance-wise). He has no experience developing in the OpenStack ecosystem, but is otherwise ready to 'get to work' after process/code familiarization. Can anyone on the horizon team offer up some cycles to help get him spun up/integrated? Or is the best bet just pointing him at the IRC channel? Thanks Chris Apsey GEORGIA CYBER CENTER
Related, there's a suggestion in the StarlingX community at the moment about the possibility of incorporating SAP's Elektra UI ( https://github.com/sapcc/elektra ) as an alternative to Horizon: http://lists.starlingx.io/pipermail/starlingx-discuss/2020-September/009659.... Looks like it's a mix of Apache and MIT/Expat (Apache-compatible) licensed Javascript and Ruby/Rails. Given there's not really any Ruby in OpenStack proper (except for Ruby-based configuration management and maybe SDKs), I expect that may not be a great starting point for a next-generation Horizon, but it could still serve as a source of some inspiration. Also this highlights an interest from some of the StarlingX contributors in Horizon replacements, so maybe they'd be willing to contribute... or at least help with requirements gathering. -- Jeremy Stanley
Hi Chris, Thanks a lot for your help. It sounds amazing and promising. Feel free to reach me in IRC (e0ne at #openstack-horizon) channel. We've got this topic to discuss it during our Virtual PTG [1], so I hope you'll join us there.
