[placement] Virtual Pre-PTG
We decided in today's placement meeting [1] that because of limited time and space at the PTG and conflicting responsibilities of the participants we'd like to prepare ourselves to only talk about things at the PTG that we weren't otherwise able to decide beforehand, in email. I've committed to orchestrating and then summarizing several conversations through a series of email threads based on the topics we choose. To do that, we need to make sure that the etherpads [2,3] reflect the important topics a few weeks before the PTG, so we can have enough time to talk. I propose we start the process the week of the 8th, giving us 3 weeks of discussion prior to the PTG, with the caveat that the week of the 22nd my availability will be limited. Between now and then make sure you topics get on the etherpads, along with as much additional info as you would normally put there. Don't fret if you think of something after the 8th, just put it on the etherpad as normal, and we'll figure it out. If the 8th is too soon or too late, please propose an alternative. If there's no need to change, I'll get things rolling on the 8th. This way the time at the PTG can be spent more oriented to reviewing our progress thus far and talking about how we can best achieve our goals in the future. I'm going to get this started later today using the "series of email threads" mentioned above. I'll give them '[placement]' and '[ptg]' and base them off whatever seems relavant from the two etherpads [2,3]. As before, feel free to continue adding to the etherpads. Also, note that I've framed in a retrospective etherpad [4] because that's often useful. I've put some guidance on there, but to repeat some of it: * try to be blameless (in the sense of a devopsy blameless post-mortem) * you don't need to restrict yourself to Stein * avoid, at least for now, entering solution space: let's look retro first

I've started threads for everything from [2,3] that seemed relevant. For each topic where I started a thread, I changed the top-level topic to bold and made the next line a link to the archive of the first email in the thread. The discussion should continue through next week. As topics reach a natural conclusion I'll summarize back to the etherpad. Anything that seems fully done I'll move to another part of the etherpad. The point with that is so that by the time the PTG comes around we're only paying attention to stuff we got stuck on during this email-based discussion. As ever, if you remember a topic that hasn't already come up, please add it to one of the etherpads. Also, so it is clear, these discussions are for everyone. You don't need to be a regular placement contributor or user to participate. If you have something to say, we want to hear it. And a reminder: There's a retrospective etherpad taking shape at [4]. Chris, despite my being quite exhausted from emails and spec reviews, I wanted to thank you for spending the time to do this. It's been very helpful and serves as a good way to gather feedback in writing before what always ends up being an exhausting PTG session-fest. Thanks, -jay

You're welcome. If we do this right we can spend the time at the PTG either in other sessions or sitting around congratulating one another for a job well done. That's the stretch goal: Make the PTG redundant from a placement perspective. -- Chris Dent ٩◔̯◔۶ https://anticdent.org/ freenode: cdent tw: @anticdent
