As DNS thing you've reported is really interesting and we never faced that eventually.

Regarding multiple node setup without vlans - eventually it can be any kind of connection. I believe on aws instances you can just create multiple networks, and attach them to instances as separate interfaces. The only thing you should be careful about - consistency of interface naming. So that all eth0 interfaces  are connected to the same network, as well as eth1, eth2, etc.
