i will also point out that nova has the ability to backup and restore the root disk cidner has the ability to do the same with volumes what is not part of either cinder or nova really is a way to do automated incremental backups and restore. freezer was tarting the more enterprise type of backups with a richer API and more options around how the backups are stored and created including encryption and storage externally form the cloud for nova we only support crating backups by creating a snapshot that is stored as an image in glance. freezer aimed to provider much finer grain control of both the backup and restore paths. i.e. block based backups, file based incremental backups, schdulable jobs to do backups on an ongoing basis. #On 18/02/2025 14:48, Jimmy McArthur wrote:
I would also recommend Storware as a paid backup solution.

Eventually, right now in Freezer we're trying to extend the design a little bit, to allow freezer-scheduler to run "centrally" as one would expect, instead completely on user VMs, which was historically a show-stopper for many to use Freezer at the first place.
You can check the blueprint in topic here: https://specs.openstack.org/openstack/freezer-specs/specs/2025.1/approved/ce...
And track down implementation of it here: https://review.opendev.org/q/topic:%22bp/centralized-scheduler%22
But also it would be always interesting to hear out what you have in mind and if project can help you with.
Though, to manage expectations right away, project was not well maintained historically and we've continued working and getting it up to speed only during this cycle. Though there are still a couple of known bugs we'd need to cover. So if you're also interested in helping project out - that totally will be much appreciated!
ya i was not sure of the current state of freezer it has a lot of potential if it achieved it original project scope but i have little context of how much of that is currently functional and how much is aspirational. it could certainly have a role in the future in terms of https://www.openstack.org/vmware-migration-to-openstack/ in bridging that gap if there was an active community around developing and extending it going forward.

As I researched there is no solution for backing up openstack virtual machines. What is the best way to organize BaaS on openstack environment? I have used snapshots and converted them to images, but this is not production solution. Thank you for your support There is the OpenStack Freezer component, but maybe you already ruled it out as not having the features you needed?

I've added a [freezer] tag in the subject line, since this may help draw the attention of people more familiar with its workings. -- Jeremy Stanley
