From my perspective, Masakari is extremely important for the ecosystem, and is a required project for all deployments, which aim to move from VMWare, as instance evacuation is a core functionality there, and is really expected by orgs onboarding to openstack from my experience at the very least.

So unless they're some plans to have instance evacuation as part of nova, we have to keep the project around.

I personally have some awareness around Masakari as well as it's history, but lack time right now to actively contribute to it.

Though, if existing community can dedicate some resources, the project might be a good candidate for dpl leadership.

At least from my side I can suggest help with administrative activities, like releasing, onboarding of other community members to processes in broader openstack community (like oslo), etc. And I have proposed help during prior meetings as well, so this discussion is not new.

We just had hopes that existing ptl will stend up for the role for another cycle.

I think the problem here is self-stated: how can we have an active project if we don't have anyone onboarded onto it well enough to lead it? There's a bit of a bootstrapping issue here, and it's why we require there to be (at least one) someone senior who can be identified as a leader for a project to remain active.

I'd be curious, for instance, if you expect your organizational situation to change considerably during the next six months allowing more time to be dedicated to masakari, or if you've identified a way to develop your knowledge on that service without anyone to mentor you.
 
I don't want to be discouraging; I'm glad you want Masakari to keep going -- but I think it'd be wise of us as an overall project to ensure we have a good path laid out for the next couple of years. We've seen a pattern develop in the past of these inactive projects getting just enough attention to keep them alive in governance, but not enough actual contribution to keep them working, well-tested, and up to date with modern python. We should resist going down this path with Masakari as well.
