I think we could. The only small complication would be handling eol tags. Part of the reason this cam up was because when we EOL'd liberty? the branch disappeared in git. I know with extended maintenance we're doing that way less often but we're still doing it.
I don't know if we'd publish one .htaccess file per series or a single file with all the redirections in it. I suspect the former would require most of the same infrastructure work.
