PTR records in Designate

We have hacked Designate to add PTR records and it is a mess. Every upgrade turns into a bug hunt. I'd like to advocate for going back to vanilla kolla-ansible but then we wouldn't have PTR records. How are other Designate users dealing with the PTR issue?
