I agree that the dancing poop GIFs are very distracting.  So "yes" to
sticking with IRC given its strengths and simplicity.  Though, I'm
biased here as a long-time happy IRC user.

Unless of course you were using the Comic Chat client for IRC... <g>

(I think on some systems, using Comic Chat on a non-CC server could get you banned).
