We stopped at the point where a precise format for the config file has to be defined. That includes the section and option names, and how they translate to the names in the settings.py. You can imagine that this is a bit of a responsibility, because once we do this, any changes to this are going to be compatibility breaking changes. The local_settings.py has always been very painful to deal with from an operator perspective (ie: horrible puppet templates for me, instead of a nice .ini provider). This task has been ongoing for YEARS.
Could you expand a little bit on how much progress has been done, and how much is still not finished?
